Jacques Hunts Down Quarterbacks

The job of a defensive end in football is much like the job of a bounty hunter.He's supposed to attack the offensive lineman and hunt the quarterback down at all costs, as a bounty hunter would track down a fugitive.Off the field, junior Phil Jacques is cool, calm and collected, but on the field he is aggressive, persistent and determined in his attempt to get to the opposing quarterback.When he was asked what position he wanted to play as a kid, Jacques knew one thing for sure; he wanted to play defense."I didn't want to play offense because I don't like to block.

Police Investigate South Campus Rape

A female UB student was allegedly raped in the South Campus area on Oct. 29 around midnight, according to a police official.The student was transported from the Main-Bailey parking lot to ECMC by an ambulance.

Gas Leak in Union Fixed

In response to a gas leak in an above-ground pipe near the front of the Student Union, University Facilities shut down the natural gas in the building last Wednesday.According to officials, National Fuel fixed the leak and corresponding gas meter after someone reported the smell of gas."They isolated it, fixed it, and put us back online," said Scott Ludtka, assistant director of facilities operations.

I woke up Tuesday morning sure we were going to win. When I drove into town to vote this afternoon I stopped and bought a bottle of champagne.The plan was to celebrate like the Bills had just won the Super Bowl on New Year's Eve.

Athletes of the WeekAthletes from both the UB men's and women's cross country team swept the University at Buffalo Male and Female Athlete of the Week award, as announced by the UB athletic department on Monday.The men are represented by Dan McKenna, a sophomore who finished 26th out of a field of 82 runners at the Mid-American Conference championships in Toledo.

Tatiana de la Tierra: Not Your Average Librarian

Though she has two newly acquired kittens and jokingly calls herself a crazy cat lady, "librarian" does not come to mind as the most fitting profession on an initial encounter with Tatiana de la Tierra.She is the polar opposite of the stereotypical frail and quiet librarian, wearing wire-rimmed glasses on a chain and her hair in a bun.

Poll Workers Note Record Student Turnout

With a total of 653 voters between District 105 and District 93, election officials at the Student Union Tuesday night said student voter turnout in the at UB hit a record high this year.Election inspectors called out numbers as the polls came to a close promptly at 9 p.m.
