New Allen movie: 40-Love

Despite the bevy of recent Woody Allen movies that have hit the net, his upcoming film "Match Point" puts some integrity back in his game.Based in the classier locale of London, the film focuses on the personal affairs of Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, "Bend It Like Beckham"), an outsider who is welcomed into British aristocracy but can never fully embrace it.Wilton gets his first taste of the upper class while pursuing a career in tennis.

Good things come in threes

After a dismal start coming off a disappointing season, UB women's basketball is suddenly one win shy of matching its total from last year.To some, three wins may not be much, but after a thorough defeat of Youngstown State, 53-40, on Wednesday night, the Bulls are riding a three-game win streak and have momentum on their side for the first time in recent memory.The Bulls boosted their record to .500 by pounding the opposition down low.

For many UB athletes who will be competing at the height of their seasons over the course of the next month, there is no "break" in "winter break."As classes come to a close, the athletic teams already in season will continue on their game schedules, while those teams not yet playing, will prepare for opponents that lay ahead.Men's basketballPicking up where they left off last season, the men's basketball team boasts a record of 7-1 and is currently on a five-game winning streak.The Bulls are set to host Rutgers on Saturday at 7 p.m., which will be broadcast on WGR 550-AM radio.

Intolerance of any religion same as zealotry

In his Dec. 7 article "Religion can go to hell," Ken Ilgunas articulates his disaffection with people he regards as "religious fanatics." His examples of religious intolerance demonstrate the extent to which people impose their personal views on others, an act that is seldom justifiable.Yet in his column, Ilgunas commits the same moral offence he so virulently deplores.

Bulls hose Flames

UB men's basketball was on fire Tuesday, and the Flames couldn't take the heat.Displaying some of their best defensive hustle of the season, the Bulls left Lynchburg, Va., with a 66-53 win over Liberty University and extended their hot start to 7-1, the best record they've had since the 1958-59 season.Liberty's team was ashes under the Bull's hooves at the Vines Center in UB's fifth consecutive victory."We played in a very adverse environment," said head coach Reggie Witherspoon.

Students help recovery

While most students use winter break as an opportunity to kick back and relax, one group of UB students is rebuilding a city.Nathaniel Cornman, a junior architecture major, is one of 23 UB students who are going to Louisiana between semesters to help relief efforts in New Orleans.The jewel city of the Mississippi delta is still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Katrina, which caused $80 billion in damage, making it the costliest hurricane ever recorded in the United States.

Tomie Arai frames identity

Inspecting a culture as an outsider can be a difficult task, but artist Tomie Arai has the unique ability to simultaneously represent American and Japanese cultures through her personal art.A compilation of Arai's work is currently on exhibit at the CEPA Gallery downtown in a series entitled "Untelling." Embodying two distinct cultures, the artist explores her dual identity through a myriad of artistic forms.As a third-generation Japanese-American, Arai's work is influenced by many cultures, but there is an apparent focus on Japanese and Chinese cultures.On the ground floor of the exhibit, there is an entire room dedicated to the family.

Jackpot in Vegas

Stalwart senior Kyle Cerminara achieved a distinct honor Friday, eclipsing the 113-career-wins mark of Gary Cooper to etch his name in the record book as UB's leader in career wins.Cerminara dominated Sin City this past weekend and was crowned champion of his weight class as he extended his winning streak to 19-0 on the season.

Prominent government advocate leaves UB for law firm

When Janet Penksa moved on to a job with an Albany law firm last week, she took with her deep connections within the New York State government.What she's left here is groundwork from some of the most effective government-university programs in recent UB history.Though her position leaves an empty desk in the fifth floor of Capen Hall, her departure does not necessarily leave UB's government advocacy abilities in a lurch, according to those who worked with her.Penksa, in her position as associate vice president of university services and director of government affairs, had a big hand in attracting government money for the recent construction of the bioinformatics center at Roswell Park."Janet directed our state and federal affairs office, promoting positive influence on UB initiatives," said Ryan McPherson, assistant vice president for government affairs.

Apartment complex still bittersweet

It's been three months since students moved into the brand new University Village at Sweethome, and many are still voicing complaints of poor Internet connections, vandalism and overall sub-par construction.The apartment complex, which has been heavily advertised as an oasis of sorts, is complete with tanning beds and a movie theater.
