UB’s parking and transportation has partnered with Reddy BikeShare to distribute an additional 50 rent-able bicycles on North and South Campus. Students and faculty can access the new GPS-enabled bicycles and their locations through the Reddy BikeShare app.

UB debuts newly designed bicycles

UB’s parking and transportation department has partnered with Reddy BikeShare to release 50 newly designed bicycles to be integrated into the UB Bikeshare program. The unveiling was followed by an inaugural ride around North Campus led by Victor E. Bull. The new bikes offer new GPS-enabled technology that can be accessed through its smartphone app.

Student Association and UBIT partner with Top Hat

Students can expect increased savings on clicker technology required in many general education classes and large lecture halls. The Student Association and UBIT signed a contract with Top Hat for the fall semester, to save students additional costs. The web-based software tool connects to students’ mobile devices or laptops, allowing professors to take attendance, administer polls, games and quizzes and share notes.


UBIT is reporting an increasing in fake job emails being sent to students’ UB email accounts.

Students are receiving an increased number of fake job offers to their UB email accounts, which are potentially jeopardizing their financial and personal information, according to UBIT.

Gov. Cuomo sponsors UB researcher

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced roughly $3 million in grants to go toward breast cancer research on Wednesday. Cuomo’s “Get Screened, No Excuses” initiative awarded Professor Jo Freudenheim with $359,024 for her work.

Campus UB physicists win $1.45 million to study high energy-physics Three UB physics professors received $1.45 million from the National Science Foundation for research in high-energy physics, according to UB Now. The foundation awarded the grant to Salvatore Rappoccio, associate professor of physics in the College of Arts and Sciences, and UB physics professors Ia Iashvili and Avto Kharchilava.

UB removes asbestos from buildings

Students and faculty are worried about UB’s current asbestos removal taking place during classes, despite university officials’ reassurance that removing the material isn’t a health concern. The university has been removing asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral substance used as insulation material, from three areas on its North Campus: Clemens Hall, Governor’s Hall and the Ellicott Complex.

Campus University awarded first ever MAC Diversity and Inclusion Institutional Award UB received the Mid-American Conference’s inaugural Diversity and Inclusion Institutional Award, recognizing the university’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion on campus and within the athletics program. Longtime Professor Gerald Finnegan acts in the one-man show, “Krapp’s Last Tape” at Irish Classical Theatre Company in the early ‘90s. Former students and faculty remember the late theatre professor.

Remembering Jerry

    “I didn’t go to the moon. I went much further.” Gerald, or Jerry, Finnegan would start his theatre classes at the beginning of each year by having his students recite this line from the memory play, “The Glass Menagerie.” The line comes from character Tom Wingfield, a shoe factory worker who doubles as an aspiring poet trying to escape from reality.

John DellaContrada named interim vice president for University Communications

UB promoted John DellaContrada to interim vice president for University Communications on Wednesday. DellaContrada, who previously served as the associate vice president for media relations and stakeholder communications, replaces outgoing Vice President for University Communications Nancy Paton. Paton stepped down on Wednesday to join the University of Florida as the school’s vice president for strategic communications. UB President Satish Tripathi emailed UB community members about Paton’s departure on July 31.

UB Office of Inclusive Excellence hosts Native American welcome event

UB community members gathered on Friday to promote Native American culture and solidify the university’s commitment to representing native students, faculty and staff in and outside the classroom. About 50 students, faculty and community members attended the Native American welcome event outside of the Student Union. The event, hosted by the Office of Inclusive Excellence, featured faculty and community speakers who discussed their work at the university, research and need for an understanding of the Native American community at UB.

Two-year Olli bus testing begins on UB’s North Campus

Olli, the autonomous eight-passenger shuttle bus, is hitting the roads on North Campus this fall. The bus is equipped with IBM Watson IoT, and lidars –– a radar-like technology that uses laser beams instead of radio waves to detect objects and measure distance. The self-driving shuttle could be a future alternative to UB Stampede busses.

UB awarded $1.45 million for physics research project

The National Science Foundation awarded UB $1.45 million in federal investment for high-energy physics research, New York’s Senators announced Tuesday. U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said the funding will go toward the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, according to a press release.
