SBI passes vote to extend current healthcare provider

Sub-Board I, the nonprofit auxiliary organization responsible for managing student fees on behalf of student governments, passed a vote yesterday to keep Blue Cross Blue Shield as UB’s health insurance provider, even though it charges $90 more than Independent Health.

It’s a Friday night. The underground dressing rooms at Club Marcella thump to the beat of pop songs playing above. UB graduate student Shawn Jenner sits in front of a mirror with a full face of makeup. He puts on a large bubblegum-pink wig. 


UB Health Promotion uses NCHA data to improve programs in its office, like it did with mindfulness, as well as other offices on campus.

UB Health Promotion survey will tackle questions on sexual health communication, food insecurity

This spring, UB Health Promotion is looking to get a snapshot of student health at UB. UB Health Promotion will email the National College Health Assessment to 20,000 students starting on Monday. The survey, a pilot test by the American College Health Association, collects students’ answers on everything from views on sexual health to mental health. This year’s survey will include questions on food insecurity, health resilience and health communication, according to UB Health Promotion employees.

Ghost town

Students woke up to blistering snow, cancelled classes and unforgivable winds as plows cleared UB parking lots on Wednesday and Thursday. Across the Buffalo-Niagara region, up to 24 m.p.h. winds and 18 inches of snow whistled in between Tuesday and Thursday night.  And you were lucky to feel your face after two minutes if you stepped outside at all.

The Spectrum remembers Thomas Halleck

Thomas Halleck was a “fireball.” He was the kind of guy who lit up every room he entered.  Sometimes with his infectious passion for journalism.  Other times with a couple of pizza slices, a hula hoop and a toilet paper roll in hand.

UPD reports 28 vehicle accidents on campus during blizzard

Twenty-eight motor vehicle accidents happened on campus Tuesday through Thursday because of low visibility and icy road conditions, according to UPD Deputy Chief Joshua Sticht. Callers reported 10 motor vehicle accidents on Tuesday — seven accidents on North Campus and three on South Campus.

International students targeted in phone scam

At least two UB international students fell victim to scam phone calls from sources claiming to be Department of Homeland Security officials, who are asking students to purchase gift cards to avoid deportation. International students across the university are receiving the calls, in which the caller impersonates an officer.

UB faculty member charged with illegally importing heroin and cocaine

A UB faculty member was arrested at his Hamburg home on Monday and charged with a federal drug crime, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. on Tuesday.  Torin Finver, a clinical assistant professor of family medicine at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, was arrested and charged with importing a controlled substance, a charge that has a maximum penalty of a $1 million fine and 20 years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

University Police appoints new chief of police

University Police appointed a new chief of police Monday after a national search.  Chris Bartolomei, former UPD assistant police chief and interim chief, began the official role as chief on Monday, following his appointment. UPD chose Bartolomei after community forums for him and two other final candidates earlier this month.
