"Terahertz technology safer, more effective than X-ray"

Working here and overseas, great minds from UB are collaborating with others around the world to make better airport security take flight.In conjunction with researchers at Queens College (City University of New York), the University of California at Santa Barbara and the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research in Japan, professors and graduate students at UB are making strides to develop a technology that could revolutionize current military, medical and airline technology.Terahertz frequencies, which are higher than microwaves but lower than potentially harmful infrared rays, are being studied for their implications in investigative searches.Andrea Markelz, Ph.D., principal investigator for the project, said that there are significant potential benefits for the technology, especially in things like airport security.

Heights house catches fire in storm aftermath

Dozens of students living in University Heights are looking forward to restored electricity and heat this week as work crews clear limbs and repair power lines in the district.Seven residents of Winspear Avenue, however, are left looking for a new home.In the aftermath of the October snowstorm that devastated Buffalo and the northern Erie County region, a fire - believed to be caused by a candle being used for light in the house - destroyed 101 Winspear early Saturday morning."It was a freak accident," said Nick Mason, a 101 Winspear resident.

University Heights still recovering

After a long weekend in the dark, University Heights and surrounding areas can expect restoration of the area this week as power is turned back on and roads are cleared.According to Buffalo Police E-District Lieutenant John King, power was restored to the South Campus area early Sunday morning, although some in the vicinity are still without electricity and heat.The aftermath has left some students scavenging for food and warmth."I still don't have power," said Mary Anne Herzog, an occupational therapy grad student.

Bulls fall short in comeback

It was a nice Sunday afternoon for a football game in Buffalo. Only this Sunday, the home football game in Buffalo did not include the Bills.Due to the horrific weather just a few days before, the game between the Buffalo Bulls (1-5 overall, 0-4 MAC) and the Miami (OH) RedHawks (1-6, 1-2) was postponed from Saturday to Sunday.

"Blizzard buddies, 80s coats and a neighborhood meeting"

"Is it Christmastime yet?" asked my three-year-old cousin in Philadelphia when my grandfather told him about the snowstorm that unexpectedly hit Western New York Thursday afternoon, and late into the night.Not quite, we told him.Although it did feel eerily like December on Friday morning as my sister and I peered out the front window at any sign of activity from the neighbors, like Mrs. Kravitz from Bewitched.

UB closed Monday as cleanup continues

Taking into account a driving ban in the Town of Amherst, hundreds of thousands of residents across the region still without power and cleanup from downed trees continuing both on and off campus, UB officials announced in a release Sunday evening that the university will remain closed on Monday.The fourth straight day closed, "essential health, safety, and facilities staff are expected to report as scheduled," according to the release.

Resident Advisors made up approximately 80 percent of the Red Jacket Dining Hall on Friday night as students from both campuses and the hotels came in for dinner - several students charged their cell phones while they ate.

Adult student juggles work and school

This fall Jillene Krause is juggling a full-time job, taking 12 credits in night classes and doing the resulting six to eight hours of homework each week.And you thought you were busy.A 36-year-old returning undergraduate student, Krause was initially overwhelmed by the responsibilities she had taken on this semester, but is finally again settling in to college life."My biggest challenge has been time," Krause said.

Bulls look to forget the past

Saturday can't come fast enough for the Bulls. After a devastating 55-25 defeat last weekend, Buffalo will look to rebound on Saturday against Mid-American Conference rival Miami (OH) at 1 p.m.
