Grad student money misused

A $230-a-night hotel room, a $500 rental car and gas and a $84 steak dinner: This could have been the bill total for a businessman that just got his holiday bonus check or it could have been an average guy indulging himself after an unexpected raise, but in nobody's wildest dreams would it have been a Graduate Student Association officer using student money for a conference trip turned vacation. With the resignation of the GSA president, this egregious abuse of student funds has become an exasperating reality. At a three-day conference in Seattle, GSA President Aubrey Blacom surpassed his $500 spending allowance with fraudulent expenditures resulting in a high-class, all expenses six-day vacation which rung up the bill to nearly $2,200 dollars.

Life Focus: Restaurant Review

If you grab a bite to eat at Off The Wall on the Elmwood Strip and like what you see, you can take it home with you.And that's not just if it's on the menu.An eatery, gallery and shop located at 534 Elmwood Ave., a highly unique aspect of the restaurant is that almost everything in the restaurant has a price tag on it.In fact, it is unlikely that a costumer will see the same lamp or chair twice. The vintage-style furniture is available for purchase by the customers and then replaced by the owners."Most restaurants give their costumers the same of everything, we pride ourselves on being different," said Marie Englert, head server at Off The Wall.

Diversity versus discrimination

For those who believed racial segregation in schools is a forgotten problem that occurred during the civil rights movement, this week has been quite the eye opener. The subject of racial integration into the classroom is addressed by a program employed by hundreds of districts across the nation to keep the enrollment of a particular school in "racial balance." While the idea of promoting diversity will find its limelight from time to time, the program is also argued to deny students (of any race) of their choice of schools merely because admissions is trying to build a racially well-rounded student body.
