Spring break 'camaraderieship'

Heidelberg Pa., "camaraderieship," a handful of dorm rooms across New York State and the phrase "tu est belle."These are my favorite spring break memories.Sure I've been to beaches and bars, I have even opted to go north when it seemed the entire population of UB was headed south.

The Student Union was filled with the sounds of screeching metal on Friday as UB Engineering Week neared a close with its most popular event, Bot Wars.Nearly 200 students watched throughout the afternoon as robots built by six different clubs competed against each other in a battle arena set up in the lobby of the Student Union.

A few UB students will be braving the Buffalo tundra this spring break, opting for charity and community rather than fun in the sun.The Leadership Development Center is still seeking a few ambitious volunteers for this year's alternative spring break program, "Give where you live."Students volunteering in the program will give back to the Buffalo community throughout spring break.

Murder. The word itself inspires fascination and fear in the average American. According to Professor David Schmid, who presented on the topic during the Cutting Edge Lecture Series at the Center for the Arts on Saturday, that average American has always been interested in crime.The lecture examined American culture and the media's influence on violence.

It started in darkness."Well, the first thing you have to realize is that it's radio," said Ira Glass, the voice piercing the darkness of the Center for the Arts Mainstage Theatre on Saturday night.Glass is the host and producer of Chicago Public Radio's popular program "This American Life," a journalistic non-fiction program focusing on the lives and experiences of Americans from all walks of life.

Buffalo head coach Reggie Witherspoon must have wished for a frantic final minute while blowing out 46 candles on his birthday cake, because that is exactly what he got.Despite a career-high 21 points from freshmen Byron Mulkey, the Bulls (11-16, 3-10 Mid-American Conference) were unable to cap a late second half come back and fell to the aggressive Golden Flashes of Kent State (18-9,10-3 MAC), 68-64."We played hard and what we talked about with the guys before the game is that we would have to come in here and not be contained and not be a pet.

Women athletes recognized at UB for national holiday

Alumni Arena was overflowing with balloons and hand-painted signs Wednesday in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.Female athletes gathered in Alumni Arena to honor women's achievement in sports at the collegiate and national level."This is UB's 17th year holding the event," said Laura Barnum, a former UB volleyball player and head coordinator of the event.
