Six years ago yesterday, the most horrific tragedy in recent American history occurred, the events taking place on United States soil.
President Simpson once described UB as a place of learning and a "generator of new ideas" that serves a diverse population in today's knowledge-based society.
Although the horror of 32 innocent students and professors on Monday at Virginia Tech was several hundred miles away, shock and sadness have gripped many at UB.
The Student Association (SA) elections are over and UB will soon have a new president, Peter Grollitsh.
In a close race that ended Wednesday, Ilia Nossov was narrowly chosen as the next student representative to the UB Council amidst accusations that he violated election rules.Nossov received 51.93 percent of the votes and his competitor Creighton Randall received 48.07 percent of the votes in the online election.Only 803 total students voted in the race open to the entire undergraduate and graduate communities through UBLearns - Nossov won by a margin of about 30 votes and the low turnout can be attributed to the lack of knowledge on the Council, according to Jen Wantz, Assistant Director of Student Activities."I think during the (Undergraduate Student Association) elections people are out in the open and they see what's happening.
After several expansions in recent years and open office space becoming harder to find for administrators and student groups alike in the Student Union, the office of Student Life - a division of Student Affairs - announced late Friday evening that a new department will soon be opening in place of the current seating outside of Putnam's dining area on the building's ground level. No students were present when the announcement was made.Vice President of Student Affairs Dennis Black told the press that although the new offices are slated for what is now popular student seating, arrangements will be made for the benefit of the entire UB community."Life is a journey, not a guided tour... in conjunction with the Student Association (SA) we will extend the SU theater hours and students will be able to eat and drink in the theater," Black said.Construction is slated to begin Tuesday and should be finished by the start of the fall semester, according to officials.
The stage is set for this year's Spring Fest, and officials say they are bringing not only a full buffet of rock to the table, but a full festival of activities.
The journey into school everyday is ritualistic. My day begins... I speed into the parking lot behind the Student Union flipping off everyone trying to steal my parking spot, which I have clearly marked with my blinker.
Five sororities are now being investigated by UB for various allegations including hazing incidents that may have occurred in the past two weeks.
