Fair Housing in Erie County is Not Quite Fair

Those in need of affordable housing in Western New York are consistently being locked out of the system designed to assist them. More than 40 years after the passage of the anti-discriminatory Fair Housing Act of 1968, a study completed through the UB School of Social Work has found that the right to fair housing remains one that only a privileged few are afforded. Fragmented policy implementation across municipalities, limited access to affordable living spaces, and fundamental discrimination based on race and socio-economic, familial, and disability statuses combine to become a backward force that many cannot overcome. The audience packed into Woldman Theater in Norton Hall Tuesday night, when Art Clokey, the creator of the ancient children's television character "Gumby," gave a live presentation on the small clay cult figure. The rather odd presentation, sponsored by the University Union Activities Board, went over quite well.

Spectrum Elects Next EIC

On Monday, The Spectrum elected Matthew Parrino as the 2011-2012 editor in chief. The election was open to the public; however, only the editorial board voted. Parrino, a non-traditional communication major, has been on staff since the fall of 2008, and in each succeeding semester, he moved up in the ranks.

Lessons Learned From Flight 3407

Dr. Gregory G. Homish, assistant professor of community health and health behavior at UB, is the first author of an article in the current issue of Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness; the article deals with disaster response in the wake of the recent Flight 3407 tragedy. "Immediate intervention [after a disaster] usually reduces tension, which can mitigate the negative impact on individual, family, and work life and improve health," Homish said. Emergency mental health is a field of practice designed to help survivors, their significant others, emergency responders, disaster workers, and the community at large to effectively cope with the extreme stresses they may face in the aftermath of a disaster.

Second Annual Poverty Workshop Draws a Large Crowd

On Friday afternoon, the basement of the St. Stanislaus Church Social Center was crowded with over 150 members of the Buffalo community for the second annual Poverty Research Workshop, which focused on the issue of women and homelessness. Buffalo is the third-highest region of poverty in the country, with 30 percent of the city's population living under the poverty level.

Satish K. Tripathi, provost for seven years, is reported to be one of two finalists under consideration for the position of UB's 15th president, according to The Buffalo News. The Buffalo News ran an article on Thursday, which stated that Tripathi's name had surfaced in recent days as a leading candidate.

UB 2020 Progress

The University at Buffalo is one step closer to making UB 2020 a reality. On Wednesday, a bill sponsored by Republican North Buffalo State Senator Mark Grisanti, entitled the "UB 2020 Flexibility and Economic Growth Act," passed through the New York State Senate and was sent on to the Assembly.

Update on University Honors College Relocation

The construction of the new University Honors College within Capen Library is expected to be finished by June 1, and the modern addition will bring an update to Capen Library. The Honors College, formerly in 214 Talbert Hall, will bring an abundance versatile space for its members and other students alike, according to Krista Hanypsiak, administrative director of the University Honors College. Representatives from the Honors College would make no comment on the cost of either the expansion or the grant that is said to have funded a lounge within the new facility. "It is important for students to have an area to meet together," Hanypsiak said.

UB Prizes Student Research

Amid the numerous state budget cuts affecting UB, one student still gets to research a topic of his choice, invite other students to a presentation at a Celebration of Academic Excellence, and receive a $500 Undergraduate Research Prize. The prize is given out every year in the spring to honor .an undergraduate student who has shown exceptional proficiency with library resources, services, and collections to produce noteworthy academic investigations.
