Film Festival Seeks Student Talent

The Student Association Entertainment department has started to accept submissions for its inaugural SA Film Festival, to be held in the Student Union Theater on March 25. "We wanted to have an opportunity for UB undergrads to show us? their hard work.

Most students come to college thinking that the parties will be like the ones they see in the movies. College parties are not all fun and games, though. About 25 percent of college students deal with significant academic consequences related to their drinking, according to the Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education.

There are no horror movies about it and Stephen King doesn't write books about it, but for some, public speaking is a less enticing choice than death. Making speeches is likely one of the last things college students want to do, but Jude Butch, the leadership program coordinator for the Center for Student Leadership and Community Engagement (CSLCE), believes it is an art that can be mastered. Speakers often overestimate the extent to which things can go wrong during a presentation.

While many individuals associate the month of December with winter break and Christmas, a vast number of students hold many different meanings when it comes to the month. There are many different and interesting religions and traditions that are celebrated throughout the winter months by students from all over the world. In the Muslim religion, a festival called Eid ul-Fitr, meaning "festivity," is celebrated for a few days as a conclusion to Ramadan, the fasting period where Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset for a month. The holiday, commonly shortened to Eid, is spread out over three days, and large family gatherings usually occur on the first day.

Plunging for a Cause

UB students and faculty, along with other individuals from all over Western New York, threw on their wetsuits and bikinis and plunged into the freezing Hamburg Town Beach water on Lake Erie on Saturday for the annual Polar Plunge. The Polar Plunge, which showcases a fun and different way of fundraising, raises money for the Special Olympics each year.

Facing AIDS

On Wednesday, condom-shaped balloons floated around the Student Union, but not for the purpose of making students laugh. Every 16 seconds, someone dies from AIDS, and SBI Health and Education Services participated in World AIDS Day to help students become more aware of this deadly disease and its effects. "This year, the theme was ?Facing AIDS,'" said Courtney Bauer, assistant supervising counselor at SBI Health Education.

Handlebars to Handle Prostate Cancer

Handlebar, Fu Manchu, Pencil, Walrus ? whatever form it's in, the mustache is making a comeback. Chris Balon, vice president of the Graduate Management Association (GMA), founded and decided to participate in "Movember," an international campaign to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) and LIVESTRONG.

Communication Students Reach Out

Students in COM 317 are bringing creativity to the lives of hundreds of elementary school children at Buffalo Public School 30 on Monday. "This is a night designed specifically for the kids and their families," said Adrian Finch, a senior communication major and team leader of the public relations and marketing team.
