A gen ed breakdown: understanding UB's potential revamp

Graphic by Jenna Bower and Chad Cooper By 2016, students entering UB may not be puzzled by phrases like ?integrated clusters? and ?e-portfolios? ? the terms are the key to UB?s proposed general education overhaul. The majority of students aren?t satisfied with UB?s current general education requirements ? a UB survey showed 68 percent of students surveyed thought the required classes were just something to ?get out of the way.? On Friday, the General Education committee ? which is leading the charge for a new curriculum ? hosted its second open forum about the suggested new program, which emphasizes critical thinking and communication skills as well as capstone projects and studying aboard.

The great graduate debate

Every year, graduating seniors debate between two options as a stepping-stone into their futures: going straight to graduate school or pursuing a job. Questions of finances and potential unemployment weigh heavily in the minds of many soon-to-be UB graduates as they debate lunging into the professional world or continuing higher education.

SA VP and president to run on separate ballots in 2015

On Wednesday, the Student Association Assembly voted to change election guidelines to have presidential and vice presidential candidates running on separate ballots. During an impromptu Senate meeting on the same night, the SA Senate passed an amendment allowing the SA president to appoint the SUNY delegates. The Assembly also voted Melissa Kathan, a sophomore political science major, to be speaker of the Assembly for the second year in a row. The previous election system required the presidential and vice presidential candidate to be elected together.

Creating recycling habits

From now until March 29, UB students could find themselves rewarded for simple acts of recycling. UB is once again participating in RecycleMania - a national competition held each spring that compares the amount of waste reduction between universities.

Campus responds to public urination complaints

Students have portable toilets on South Campus, but many feel the addition is not a solution to a bigger problem. After hearing community members' complaints about students urinating on South Campus property, UB placed Porta Potties near the Main Street bus stop.

When Student Association Treasurer Siddhant Chhabria came to UB from his native India, he was expecting a crazy experience like the one he saw in American Pie. He soon realized college in America is completely different from what he imagined. Throughout his college career, Chhabria has taken steps to transition from his wild perception to a matured approach.

AASU hosts second annual vigil to remember Danny Chen

On Oct. 3, 2011, Su Zhen and Yan Tao Chen's lives changed dramatically. The couple's 19-year-old son, Private Danny Chen, was found dead in a guard tower in Afghanistan while he was serving in the army. Chen shot himself in the head because he was facing racial military hazing by fellow soldiers, according to The New York Times. UB's Asian American Student Union (AASU) held a candlelight vigil last Wednesday, on the eve of the second anniversary of his death, to memorialize Chen.

Brothers band together for Buffalo's community

Four years ago when Kyle McJury was pledging to his fraternity, the freshman would fill his free time cleaning out yards and shoveling driveways for the elderly and disabled residents who couldn't do it themselves. Today, McJury, a senior finance major and vice president of community service for UB's Delta Sigma Pi, Alpha Kappa chapter participates in various community service projects with the fraternity. Founded in 1925, Delta Sigma Pi, a national fraternity, is the university's largest professional business fraternity that prides itself on its involvement in the community.

Sweating the issues

Racism, sexism, homophobia, low wages, random firing of employees, sexual harassment, physical and verbal abuse, forced overtime, child labor - these are the conditions in sweatshops around the world. UB students are trying to change them. After two years of not meeting, UB Students Against Sweatshops (UBSAS) got together to discuss these conditions and what the club can do to change them.

Most 10-year-olds spend their time playing outside, watching cartoons or enjoying the reactions." Gorman was playing at her friend's aunt's wedding when she was 10 years old, and though she was one of the younger guests in attendance, her talent with the harp stole the show. Eight years later, with more experience under her belt, Gorman continues to awe spectators with her talent, while living out her passion for music. Since being introduced to the piano and the harp at the age of 5 by her mother, Gorman has taken lessons to improve her skills.

Invisible Children visits UB

Last spring, the world joined together because of one movement: KONY 2012. Millions watched a 30-minute video that soon became one of the most viral videos on the Internet. Many Americans, especially the younger generations, rose for a cause and used the power they have to make a change - all because of one man: Joseph Kony. On Wednesday night, UB Girl Effect did its part in reviving Invisible Children's mission by screening the organization's latest video, Move, which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the aftermath of KONY 2012 and its creator, Jason Russell.

At 9 years old, Grace Armbruster faced one of the most challenging obstacles in her life. After struggling with reading in her classes for years, she finally found out why she always felt left behind and wasn't learning things as fast as the rest of her classmates. She is dyslexic. According to research done by Headstrong Nation, one in seven Americans is diagnosed with learning disabilities.

The truth behind Columbus Day

Last Monday, Americans all over the country recognized Columbus Day. They celebrated Columbus' discovery of the New World and the birthplace of America. Some students were upset by the holiday - some because classes were not canceled, others because it was the celebration of a serial killer. Columbus Day, a holiday celebrated in this country for over 500 years, is observed in 41 states, honoring the man that discovered America.
