Marching to their own beat

The Center For the Arts is a hub for storytelling. Some groups share their stories through song and theater - others like to tell tales of Japanese origin through explosive displays of percussion and choreography. On Tuesday night, TAO: Phoenix Rising performed for a packed audience at UB's Center For the Arts (CFA). The Japanese-Taiko style drumming and dance troupe travels the world performing for various audiences with their shows, which consist of dance, drumming, flutes and string instruments like the Shamisen and Koto. Whether it was about a beautiful woman in the forest accompanied by calm and pleasant music or the excitement of a party with performers' loud percussion and chants, each story the group performed took on its own personality. "I really enjoy this kind of music, and it's not easy to find in Buffalo," said Kirsten Reitan, an English as a Second Language program faculty member.

House of Beats: House music playlist

There is something about Electronic Dance Music (EDM or house music) that makes a person want to throw their hands in the air and let go of all their stress. When you hear its deep, bellowing bass and electronic sounds, a crazy feeling takes over your body and you don't stop dancing until the song does. This playlist will give you what we think is some of the best house music to get the party started wherever you are - and to keep it going until the wee hours of the morning. Konze's Krescendo

As Head North, a local band, took the stage at The Waiting Room to kick off their month-long East Coast tour, frontman guitarist Brent Martone motioned for the crowd to push toward the stage. In a matter of seconds, I felt someone shove me; the enthralled occupants were pushing toward the stage. When I turned around, all I saw were sweaty faces and bodies upon bodies.

Sweeter with time: Atlas album review

When Real Estate came out with their sophomore album Days in 2011, the band's popularity grew. Reviews of the album were positive, and the band gained consciousness among indie lovers. With their new album Atlas, Real Estate builds upon past success, creating the same sound with a bit more vocal punch to it. They have matured from a breakthrough indie band to a concrete, consistent indie band. Atlas is proof of this.

Though some students may be jetting off toward booze-filled horizons this Spring Break, plenty of the UB population will be wrapped up in the warmth of their comforters, settling in for a long week of doing nothing. But lying around can only last for so long - idle thumbs will start to twitch, and you're going to need something to keep you entertained.
