As a junior engineering major, Amelia Rose, found a seat in Lockwood Memorial Library with her mint tea and a tote bag full of projects and binders of lecture notes. She would have never expected to land a conversation on universal interconnectedness, the theories that entail chance encounters and the uncanny ways people's lives may intertwine. As for Rose, the belief that “everything is connected” can’t be coincidental — there are instances she claims she sees play out every day at UB.

I still vividly remember the first time I watched “Slumdog Millionaire” with my peers in the seventh grade. Hearing the applause of my classmates, and the praise given to the remarkable acting of Dev Patel, gave me a certain pride. Although I don’t know him personally, seeing someone who looks like me in a leading role in cinema filled me with not only joy, but a sense of confidence — a feeling that the culture I love and view so highly had a rightful place in Hollywood. But at the same time, it clashed with the expectations that I had always known — expectations that spanned centuries, and left little room for dreams like these.

In 2001, a photograph by Corinne Day sped up eight years of work for Rick Owens and put him on the map. Kate Moss was photographed for Vogue Paris wearing one of his distressed leather jackets, which caught the eye of Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. This jacket was draped, dark and looked nothing like the clothes that were being showcased at the time. Most people weren’t familiar with Owens as he was working out of his small studio in Hollywood and had no budget for advertising. Still, Wintour was drawn to his image and his life changed from that point on.

UB's protest policies have been a topic of conversation since May 2024, when fifteen people were arrested after university police called in outside law enforcement. The Faculty Senate passed a resolution denouncing police escalation. The administration revised its time, place, and manner policies over the summer. Mostly, the revisions were non-substantive. My goal is to change this. The substance of the protests aren't a concern here; UB should support students' rights to express whatever peaceful viewpoint they choose to. The problem is that UB utilized vague policies and excessive force to quash those students' voices.

With numerous political conflicts occurring in our country and around the world, there has been an increase in wanting to keep politics out of sports, music, literature, visual and performing arts. Whether it's the recent criticism over Bad Bunny’s halftime performance at Super Bowl LX or former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the National Anthem a decade ago, many people feel the need to keep political activism out of the entertainment industry.

In the vast region of the Arctic, survival was once measured by a few millimeters of space. For the Sakha people, the charapchy—traditional snow goggles—were a masterpiece of functionality, with narrow horizontal slits to protect the eyes from the intense glare of sun on snow. These were a necessary form of protection that came from a deep understanding of the environment.

I am sick of reused material. In our current entertainment landscape, a large percentage of mainstream entertainment that’s being released and promoted nowadays — movies, TV shows, video games — is just cannibalizing previous trademarks. We have a trend of sequels, prequels, remakes, universes and franchises, but very little of anything new.

The men’s basketball team (17-14, 7-11 MAC) battled through a very competitive first half of their game against the Toledo Rockets (17-14, 11-7 MAC), trailing by just four points at halftime; as the high-scoring game took its course, Toledo proved too much to overcome as the Bulls lost 98-78.
