Academic stars

Two of the men's basketball team's four seniors garnered more post-season awards during spring break, while they were competing in the Mid-American Conference Tournament and the National Invitation Tournament.

Turner Battle and Mark Bortz were named to the Academic All-MAC Team. This is the third straight year that Turner Battle has been named to both the All-MAC Team and the Academic All-MAC Team.

In addition to being named to the Academic All-MAC Team, Battle has been named a second team Academic All-American. He has maintained a 3.55 GPA as a communication major at UB, and averaged 15.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game this year.

For Bortz, this is his second year being named to the Academic All-MAC Team. He was second to Battle in scoring, with 10.1 points per game, he is also second on the team in rebounding with 5.8 rebounds per game. He led the Bulls in one category, blocks, with 36 this year.

Catching honors

After a monster week in which he hit four homeruns, had 10 RBIs and batted .448, UB's sophomore catcher Dan Quinn has been named the MAC East division's player of the week.

Quinn, who started this year 0-6, caught fire last week in games against Towson and UMBC. In addition to his offensive prowess, Quinn also recorded a few gems in the field, throwing out five would-be base stealers in just seven attempts.

His homerun in the seventh inning against UMBC put the Bulls ahead for good in that game.

Quinn is the only UB position player to garner MAC East player of the week honors. The Bulls have, however, recorded many pitcher of the week honors, including Sean McWilliams who received that honor two weeks ago.
