From UB to CBS, NBC and FOX, alumna Ellen Fleysher will speak Saturday about her journey from Buffalo undergrad to media powerhouse. Fleysher, currently a producer at FOX News, will return to UB this Saturday as a guest speaker for the Cutting Edge Lecture Series.
Saturday at 10:30 a.m., the fourth of five Cutting Edge Lectures will be held at the Center for the Arts. "From Buffalo to Beijing and Back: My Life in Network News" will follow Fleysher's journey from Public School 66 in Buffalo to Vietnam, China, CBS, NBC, tracking Castro, and becoming a contributor to The New York Times.
According to Michele Bewley, assistant to dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Fleysher wants to help students learn to make contacts in the industry and offer the professional guidance that she would have benefited from when starting in the industry.
"The series is focused on introducing high school students to the opportunities at the university, but it is open to anybody. We've had retirees, parents and college students attend," Bewley said.
A question-and-answer session will follow Fleysher's lecture.
Fleysher graduated from UB with a degree in American studies, and from 1969 to 1974 worked as a war correspondent in Vietnam. She then anchored the weekend news on CBS. Fleysher has also worked with the NYPD.
Registration for this free event will be from 10 to 10:30 a.m. the day of the lecture.
