University Police put out a garbage can fire Friday afternoon that caused Lockwood Library to be temporarily evacuated.

Steven Herberger, manager of fire and life safety, located a small fire inside a garbage can outside Lockwood and Officer Jeffrey Walters used a fire extinguisher to put it out. Lockwood had to be evacuated because smoke entered the building, but students were allowed to re-enter after Getzville Fire Company cleared the area.

Chief of Police Gerald Schoenle said it was not possible to say for sure what caused the fire.
