Buffalo News sportswriter dies of injuries from fall
Buffalo News sportswriter Tom Borrelli died Thursday morning at Erie County Medical Center due to complications from a fall at All High Stadium.
On Nov. 8, Borelli fell down a steep staircase while covering a high school football game for the News. He scaled near a dozen metal stairs up to the press box before apparently striking his head on a steel girder and falling backwards down the stairs.
The 51-year-old was paralyzed from the neck down and breathing with a respirator. While his family hoped that his condition would improve after swelling diminished, his condition worsened over the past few days.
Borrelli covered the Buffalo Bandits lacrosse team for the News and became the first sportswriter inducted into the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame in 2007. The Tom Borrelli Award, created in 2005, is an annual honor presented to the league's most outstanding newspaper writer or columnist.
