Success on Tonawanda Creek
UB's crew team hosted races on the waters of the Tonawanda Creek and Erie Canal Saturday, defeating Colgate and Bucknell handily. The Bulls swept all four races they entered, with Bucknell taking the lone race in which Buffalo did not compete.
The UB Varsity 8 dominated on a day when the sun came out in perfect weather for crew. The squad finished in 6:09.21, more than nine seconds faster than either competitor. Buffalo's second Varsity 8 also won their race.
The Bulls kept rolling as the Novice 8 team sped to a win over two Bucknell entries. The Bulls won by almost 13 seconds, the largest margin of the day.
Buffalo's Lightweight 8 team remained undefeated this season by beating a Bucknell squad by five seconds.
The Bulls continue competition this coming weekend in the Knecht Cup in Camden, N.J.
Draft watch on Battle
Turner Battle, senior point guard on the men's basketball team, participated in the four-day Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, culminating in championship games held on Saturday. Battle, who was a member of team MD Designs, helped his team to a 2-1 record and a win in the consolation championship.
Battle started one game in the tournament. He recorded 13 assists and two turnovers. Battle also had a steal in every game and scored a total of 14 points in his 70 minutes of playing time.
The impact, if any, that Battle had on the 300-plus NBA scouts is unknown. Battle now awaits word on whether or not he will be selected as a participant in the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in June.
