Zornick's donkey logic

Letter to the Editor

As I read George Zornick's "Coulter Shock" article ("Coulter shock," March 2), one word just kept popping into my head to describe his writing: jackass-ness. Now, that's not a word you hear very often, I'm sure, so let me just clarify exactly what I meant by it. Like most writers on The Spectrum's staff, I find Mr. Zornick's columns to lean too much to the left for my GOP taste. But my complaint about the article is not its political inclinations, or even his fervent dislike and fear of Ann Coulter (I find myself disagreeing with Ann Coulter on quite a few issues, except for that of France, which we most definitely SHOULD invade). Like so many other dime-a-dozen journalists on the UB campus, Zornick misdirects his aggression toward somewhere that it has no place: in this case, it's the Office of Special Events.

I'm sick of writers generating cheap thrills that criticize the SA and its programs. Not that I particularly love the SA, but its still kind of sad to see bored, stupid college journalists slinging mud any which way they can, looking for stories where there are none, and trying so hard to emulate early 1900s reporters muckrakers who actually may have made a difference. Now, even the Office of Special Events comes under fire from the Editor in Chief? The Distinguished Speaker Series has had quite a few great personalities visit the UB campus, including "The Donald" himself, and now Janet Reno and Ann Coulter.

Sure, Ann Coulter has never had any real political office, and Janet Reno has had a pretty good career.

Maybe they're not "equals" in this debate. But Coulter is a best seller and has published several times, and will be very good debating material versus a high profile Democrat. Personally, I was stunned to hear these two would be at UB simultaneously, in a debate no less, as was everyone in my family that I told.

So all in all, I'd have to tell Zornick this: put a cork in it, relax and enjoy the debate. Maybe you'd learn something by letting somebody else talk for once. Hopefully listening to some opinions that are thought out for longer than six seconds will do wonders for that little case of "jackass-ness" I was talking about.
