Rain Check

It was an inauspicious start for UB softball at the Arizona State tournament as the Bulls' first tournament of the season was cancelled.

The Bulls were scheduled to face New Mexico, Arizona State, Sacramento State and two nationally ranked teams, fourth-ranked Texas and 18th ranked Fresno State.

Instead of opening the season at the tournament, the Bulls will now open their season in two weeks at the Houston Invitational, where they are currently slated to face Central Connecticut, Houston, and Northern Illinois two times each. The Houston Invitational begins on Feb. 25 and continues through Feb. 27.

Record breakers

En route to two 10th place finishes, UB's men's and women's track and field teams set five new school records. Jenny Koeppel not only cut 14 seconds off of UB's previous best in the 3,000-meter race, but she placed third in the event and provisionally qualified for the NCAA tournament in that event. Jen Jezorski earned seventh place in the race and, in doing so, qualified for the ECAC event.

Jezorski was also a part of UB's record-setting relay team. Along with Stacy Downer, Kate Kohout and Kelli O'Brien, Jezorski set a new record in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:44.97, which is 15 seconds faster than the former record best. The foursome also qualified for the ECAC tournament.

Faith Thompson was the final woman to set a new school record. In the shot put, Thompson tossed 49-9 feet (15.16m), beating the University's previous best by two and a quarter inches.

For the men, Todd Joki and Paul Riley each broke records. Joki trotted into sixth place in the 60-meter hurdles, ending with a time of 8:15, which was two full seconds faster than his previous best finish.

Riley set a record in the mile with a finish of 1:21.36, which was two seconds better than the previous university record.
