Conference game of the week
UB's men's basketball game against Akron on March 5 has been announced as the Mid-American Conference game of the week. It will air locally on WNLO UPN 23 and regionally in Ohio on Fox Sports Net. The game has been moved from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The Bulls' home finale has serious implications for UB's post-season hopes. Both the bulls and the Zips are 10-6 in conference play, and are involved in a four-way tie for second place in the MAC East division. In the MAC, the two divisional winners get a bye in the first round of the MAC tournament, as does the team with the next best record.
This game is also big because it is the final home game for the Bulls' four seniors: Turner Battle, Daniel Gilbert, Mark Bortz and Jason Bird.
Spring training
In a tough preseason opening match-up, the UB Bulls' baseball team lost its first two games to a tough Kentucky Wildcats team. The Bulls' first game, on Friday, was an extra innings thriller that the Bulls dropped by a final score of 4-3.
UB kept the Wildcats' leading hitter, Michael Bertram, silent throughout the game, but they were unable to hold on and take the victory. The Bulls had a 3-1 lead in the third inning, but the Wildcats were able to come back and tie the game by the fifth inning.
The Wildcats were unable to get back on the board from there as the Bulls' pitching staff was able to strand 13 Wildcats, including getting out of two bases loaded jams. However, in the 10th inning, after four and two thirds innings of scoreless relief, UB's bullpen gave up a sacrifice fly in the tenth inning with runners on first and third base to end the game.
In the team's second match up on Saturday, the Bulls fell behind early and found themselves down 10-2 in the third inning. UB was able to mount a come back in the seventh inning, when sophomore Al Barbato hit a two-out, two-RBI pinch-hit single. The Bulls were able to tack on three more runs, but it proved to be too little too late, and the Bulls dropped the game by a final score of 10-7
UB will continue their pre-conference games on Friday when they travel down south to face Georgia Southern.
