Creating a more trans-understanding environment

Transgenderism: When a person’s self-identification doesn’t reflect the biological sex in which they were born and the gender norms that are commonly associated with that sex. We’ve seen the big faces on our TV screens, like Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner, and we’ve heard their stories. But how much do we know about the trans-experience of the greater majority who don’t have the luxury of being a celebrity?

Winter fashion do's and don’ts

Cold weather can force many of us to fall into that routine cycle of sweatpants and old coats from high school. I promise you, it’s really not against the law to look halfway decent in the winter – although many people seem to think otherwise.


African Awareness Week is run by the African Student Association (ASA) in an effort to bring awareness to the varying types of African culture through events they hold each day. The week comes to an end with their last event on Saturday, with “Shades of Afrique.”

UB ASA holds African Awareness Week

The African Student Association (ASA) held its annual African Awareness Week this past week, highlighting different African cultures and their unique contrast with American culture through events for the UB community. It aimed to demonstrate that “African” culture is an umbrella term for a continent encompassing many different countries with different ethnicities and traditions.


Kathryn McSpedon, a junior English major and member of Students for Sensible Drug Policy, has started a petition aimed at UB Parking and Transportation Services demanding the Stampede buses travel downtown to prevent drunk driving and give students a safe option to explore Buffalo’s nightlife. Thirty five students have signed already and the group hopes to use the petition to incite change.

The Stampede currently runs a five-mile route from North to South Campus. The petition is on change.org and had 35 signatures as of Sunday evening.


Pumpkin patches around Buffalo, like The Great Pumpkin Farm, are a perfect Halloween activity to try if you’re not a big fan of haunted houses or other scary Halloween activities.

Among the different events held on UB’s campus for Halloween, there are a handful of things to do off campus as well. Apple and pumpkin picking are popular Halloween activities around the country, so here is a list of the places in Buffalo where one can enjoy the holiday.


Caribbean Student Association Vice President Shawn Gibson makes a smoothie, which is one event the CSA offered this week in the Student Union. All of the events were intended to encourage students to learn more about Caribbean culture.

CSA looks to bring Caribbean culture to UB

UB’s Caribbean Student Association (CSA) has held its annual Caribbean Awareness Week throughout this week, with events to highlight Caribbean culture, educate the UB community and dispel stereotypes. CSA want more students to be aware of Caribbean culture because of the Caribbean population at UB and the influence the culture has on society.


Engineering is one of the top majors at UB, according to Career Services. It is one of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields that have been growing exponentially in the past few years.

Is there such a thing as a ‘best’ major?

UB offers students approximately 100 undergraduate degree programs, from which students pick one or two that ultimately predict their likelihood of employment and success after college. Data at UB shows that the STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – fields are a student’s best bet.

UB LASA’s Latin socials expose students to Latin culture

The LASA holds Latin socials, which consist of performances and educating participants of traditional Latin dances, every Tuesday night. The choreographers usually give a brief history of the dance and where it comes from, and shortly after, teach the dance to everyone who comes.


The UB Step Troupe has decreased in size significantly over the last few years but is working to rebuild and strengthen itself as a club and as a family.

Resilient is the best way to describe the UB Step Troupe (UBST). Despite reputation and miscommunication problems that caused its membership to drop from the largest club on campus to a much smaller group, UBST celebrates its 23rd year of performing and competing.
