Celebration of Haitian culture at UB
By MOFEI LIU | Oct. 29, 2007This past Saturday, members of the Haitian Student Association (HSA) celebrated their heritage with an evening of food, dance, music and culture.The show, called "Tribute to Haiti: Resurrection of Love," featured an ethnic dance, the singing of the Haitian national anthem by HSA member Louise Calixte, a performance by the UB Step Troupe and a comedic play about love lost and found.According to HSA President David Louis, "Tribute to Haiti" helped raise money for a school in Haiti.
UB recruits well-known scientist to develop electronics of the future
By MOFEI LIU | Oct. 19, 2007Gottfried Strasser, a well-known Austrian researcher, joined the UB faculty six weeks ago to take advantage of a $750,000 grant from the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR).A professor of physics and electrical engineering, Strasser developed a reputation as a world-class researcher while he was an associate professor at the Solid State Electronics Institute at the Technical University of Vienna, Austria."Famous Austrians include Mozart and Arnold Schwarzenegger," he said.

UB president calls for tuition increase at FSEC meeting

Simpson, the low cost of tuition at UB could be putting the university at a disadvantage when it comes to keeping up with the competition.At Tuesday's Faculty Senate Executive Committee (FSEC) meeting, held at the Center for Tomorrow, Simpson acknowledged that UB does not compare favorably with similar-sized public research universities around the country.

New software offers game design opportunities for both Xbox and PC
By MOFEI LIU | Sep. 19, 2007In a presentation held in the Student Union on Sept. 17, representatives from Microsoft introduced a new game development platform that enables anyone with a computer and Internet connection to create and distribute games for PC and Xbox 360.According to Gus Weber, academic relations manager for Microsoft, the platform - called XNA - is free to download and features complete access to an online code database as well as a drag-and-drop interface, one that minimizes the need to write original code."This is a video game development for the masses.

By MOFEI LIU | Sep. 14, 2007Faculty representatives discussed concrete steps toward UB 2020's campus improvements as well as changes to University policies regarding Campus Cash, textbook royalties and the registration schedule during Tuesday's general meeting session.Peter Nickerson, director of the pathology graduate program at the UB Medical School, reported on the Faculty Student Association's (FSA) efforts to make Campus Cash more widely accepted."The FSA has expanded Campus Cash to a variety of local vendors, not only on campus but also around UB," Nickerson said.
