Racing in their first event of the year, the rowing team used discipline to gain successful results at the Head of the Genesee Invitational on Saturday. The Bulls' Varsity 8 "A" boat finished 45 seconds after the race winner Duke University and took second place with a race time of 32:36.56.
On Saturday, the cross-country team traveled to Penn State's Blue and White Golf Courses to participate in one of the largest tournaments of the year. Not only was the tournament one of the largest, it also had some of the best competition in the country, making for a tough weekend for every squad. The lineup included the defending NCAA Champion Villanova, a team that ran four All-Americans from last year on Saturday.
On Saturday night, the men's soccer team not only had to play against the best team in the Mid-American Conference, but they had to deal with the No.1 ranked team in the country. As expected, the Akron Zips (11-0-1, 4-0-0 MAC) bullied the Buffalo Bulls (5-7-1, 1-2-0 MAC) from start to finish in a 4-0 game. Despite the score, Bulls head coach John Astudillo thought the effort from the Zips was top notch. "I think from almost every aspect on the field, Akron was quite a bit better and more efficient than we were," Astudillo said. The Zips came roaring out of the gates, led by freshman forward Darren Mattocks.
The men's tennis team took to the courts this weekend to claim regional supremacy. The USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships ran from last Thursday to Monday and showcased top talent from schools such as Princeton, Harvard, Boston College and Dartmouth. With such prestigious names on the schedule, many opponents would be intimidated.
The women's soccer team was twice in position over the weekend to win its first game since early September.

Bradley Parker navigated his way through the crowd, dodging elbows, shoves, and dirty looks while dozens of people waited in line to enter The Northside bar Saturday night on Main Street. According to Parker, a sophomore communication major, the bar was rowdier, hotter and more packed than normal.
The men's soccer team played the first of three-straight road games on Saturday and looked for their first win in over a week. They are still searching for a victory. Buffalo (4-6-1, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) lost 2-0 to the Bowling Green Falcons (4-4-2, 1-2 MAC) to extend their winless streak to three games. The loss also marked the fifth time that the Bulls have been shut out this season. "I think that we played well at the end," said head coach John Astudillo.
With the season slowly slipping away, the volleyball team needed to make a statement. They did just that on Saturday night. For the second consecutive game at Alumni Arena, the Bulls (14-8, 2-4 Mid American Conference) found themselves entrenched in a five-set war.
It wasn't a good weekend for the women's soccer team. The Bulls (1-12-1, 0-5-1 Mid-American Conference) had two chances at home over the weekend to notch their first conference win of the season against Central Michigan (8-3-1, 5-0 MAC) and Eastern Michigan (6-5-3, 3-0-2 MAC). Both attempts came up short as the Bulls failed to score a goal in either game. On Friday night, the Bulls fell 3-0 to the Chippewas and followed that up with a 1-0 heartbreaking defeat against the Eagles. Despite the shutout loss against Central Michigan, Bulls head coach Michael Thomas had nothing but praise for the Chippewas after the game. "Central Michigan is a very good soccer team," Thomas said.
The women's soccer team brought a six-game losing streak into last weekend's games, and after two hard fought matches, they broke the string, barely. After falling 1-0 on Friday night against Northern Illinois, (6-4-1, 2-4-1 Mid-American Conference), the Bulls (1-10-1, 0-3-1 MAC) salvaged the weekend with a 0-0 draw against Western Michigan (6-5-1, 2-1-1 MAC). Sunday's shutout by freshman goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon was the first of her career and the first for the Bulls since October 2009.
