Men's soccer loses third straight
By Steve Carr | Oct. 11, 2010The men's soccer team played the first of three-straight road games on Saturday and looked for their first win in over a week. They are still searching for a victory. Buffalo (4-6-1, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) lost 2-0 to the Bowling Green Falcons (4-4-2, 1-2 MAC) to extend their winless streak to three games. The loss also marked the fifth time that the Bulls have been shut out this season. "I think that we played well at the end," said head coach John Astudillo.
Volleyball conquers Ball State for first time
By Courtney McHale | Oct. 11, 2010With the season slowly slipping away, the volleyball team needed to make a statement. They did just that on Saturday night. For the second consecutive game at Alumni Arena, the Bulls (14-8, 2-4 Mid American Conference) found themselves entrenched in a five-set war.
Winless streak reaches double digits
By Vinny Lepore and Troy Haimowitz | Oct. 10, 2010It wasn't a good weekend for the women's soccer team. The Bulls (1-12-1, 0-5-1 Mid-American Conference) had two chances at home over the weekend to notch their first conference win of the season against Central Michigan (8-3-1, 5-0 MAC) and Eastern Michigan (6-5-3, 3-0-2 MAC). Both attempts came up short as the Bulls failed to score a goal in either game. On Friday night, the Bulls fell 3-0 to the Chippewas and followed that up with a 1-0 heartbreaking defeat against the Eagles. Despite the shutout loss against Central Michigan, Bulls head coach Michael Thomas had nothing but praise for the Chippewas after the game. "Central Michigan is a very good soccer team," Thomas said.
Bulls banking on momentum kick
By Matthew Parrino | Oct. 6, 2010The women's soccer team brought a six-game losing streak into last weekend's games, and after two hard fought matches, they broke the string, barely. After falling 1-0 on Friday night against Northern Illinois, (6-4-1, 2-4-1 Mid-American Conference), the Bulls (1-10-1, 0-3-1 MAC) salvaged the weekend with a 0-0 draw against Western Michigan (6-5-1, 2-1-1 MAC). Sunday's shutout by freshman goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon was the first of her career and the first for the Bulls since October 2009.

Affordable competition
By Brian Josephs | Sep. 29, 2010Tuition, the cost of living and activity fees have been steadily increasing for students at UB. All the while, New York State budget cuts have been adding to student concerns. In light of the difficult times, the Recreational and Intramural Services (RIS) have been doing their part to keep activities affordable for students. Strapped with a $63,000 budget, RIS has not increased their fees for intramural sign ups in the past two years.

No goal results in win for Buffalo
By Steve Carr | Sep. 28, 2010It's never the norm for a team to score the only goal of a game and still come away with a loss. But that's what happened on Tuesday night as the Bulls opened their Mid-American Conference schedule against Hartwick. Hartwick (1-7-1, 0-1 MAC) scored the only goal of the game, but the Bulls (4-4, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) came away with their first conference win in a 1-0 victory thanks to the own goal. In the 28th minute, Hartwick sophomore midfielder Simon Greatwich tried to clear a corner kick that sailed into the box off the foot of junior defender Tom Beckvermit, but ended up heading it into his own goal. "I think the pressure made the backs a little indecisive," said Buffalo head coach John Astudillo.
Where does the athletics budget go?
By JACOB LAURENTI | Sep. 26, 2010$23,444,104. That was the athletic department's budget for the 2008-09 academic year. Between SUNY budget cuts, the delaying of UB 2020 and the rise in student tuition, this figure, at a glance, may shock and upset many. But the breakdown of how the money is spent tells a much different story. Athletic expenses include everything from scholarships and salaries, to team travel and equipment.
Weekend split at home
By Zach Filzen and Carey Beyer | Sep. 26, 2010The volleyball team came within two points of perfection over the weekend. On Saturday night, The Bulls (13-5, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) allowed Bowling Green (6-10, 1-1 MAC) to come from behind to win in a five set war, 3-2 (25-18, 16-25, 19-25, 25-22, 17-15). The disappointing loss to the Falcons put a damper on a great start.
