#RIPMitchLucker

Anyone with a Twitter account should have noticed a hashtag trend last week that had the Internet filled with grief. #RIPMitchLucker. And while most of you might be unfamiliar with who Mitch Lucker is, the metal music scene wanted to believe it was just another Twitter hoax. Lucker, vocalist for metal band Suicide Silence, passed away early Nov.

Turning over a new leaf

Washington and Colorado became the first states to decriminalize recreational marijuana use this week, and all bloodshot eyes are on them to see what unfolds next. The new law will allow adults over the age of 21 to buy as much as one ounce from a licensed retailer in Washington and grows up to six plants on private property in Colorado.

OPINION

A Collins catastrophe

Chris Collins is headed to Washington. That might be the most terrifying sentence I've ever read. And as UB students living within the 27th Congressional District, you should feel the same.

And so it goes

Shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday, all major networks projected the re-election of President Barack Obama.

OPINION

The games have just begun

The polls have closed, the dust has settled and the votes are in. Now everybody on my Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram feeds can finally shut up. Don't get me wrong; I actually think it's a beautiful thing our country gives its citizens the privilege of free speech.

OPINION

Two months too soon

The NBA season is underway and there is one big three that couldn't care less: Me, myself and I. Don't get me wrong; I'm a basketball fan - definitely more of a college fan, but I enjoy the pro game as well, especially after last year's shortened season. What was so great about it last year? After a summer lockout, fans - myself included - lost sleep over the thought of a winter without Kobe Bryant.

OPINION

The Natural

Well, it finally happened. The Bulls have won against a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent for the first time in just under a year. There were many clutch performances in what was an eventful game, including junior running back Branden Oliver's 199 yards on the ground, freshman quarterback Tony Daniel's big throw in the fourth quarter off a botched field goal attempt and sophomore kicker Patrick "Patty Ice" Clarke's two field goals, including the game winner.

Crossing the line

It took Mayor Bloomberg until the final 36 hours to cancel the New York City Marathon. Last week, the New York City mayor stood firm in his defense even in the face of criticism, stating it would lift the city's spirits.

Shifting the conversation

Superstorm Sandy is still very much in effect, but that doesn't stop our politicians from talking about the cause. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo became the first politician to publicly link Sandy to climate change and urged governments and the public to take note of the consequences likely to occur if the world continues to ignore the phenomenon.

Wear it loud and proud

In theory, high school is the place where students begin to learn who they are and, in turn, learn how to accept each other.

The Mitt that fits

On Nov. 6, I will be a brand new 22-year-old. And for the first time in my life, I will be doing something that I have been waiting to do for a long time. Vote.

OPINION

Two-ring circus

Four botched field goals. Two interceptions. One fumble. Countless dropped passes. On Saturday, Toledo did everything it could to lose its game against Buffalo - one of the strangest games I have ever seen.

OPINION

I'm voting for Obama because I'm a female college student

As a 21-year-old woman voting in her first presidential election, I'm voting for Barack Obama. In 2008, I was 17 years old, just on the cusp of voting, and I started to pay attention to politics, thanks to a great government teacher who tried to make us excited about our country for the first time.

Indecision 2012

If you read any other newspapers, you might notice something different in the confines of its pages every election year: a candidate endorsement, an editorial piece where the editorial board of the organization meets, discusses and decides who they wish to endorse for elected office. Here at The Spectrum, this will not be the case.

It's not about the bike

It seems UB's Distinguished Speaker Series is cursed. In 2010, UB hosted author and humanitarian Greg Mortenson, who went through a yearlong investigation on allegations that major portions of his books were inaccurate and that he was mismanaging assets at his Central Asia Institute. Last year, the series brought forth Lance Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor. Rather, former seven-time Tour de France winner. Armstrong was officially stripped of his titles yesterday, the result of overwhelming amounts of evidence of him leading a doping conspiracy since 1999.

#DeepThoughtsByKeren

"Trick or treat, smell my feet; give me something good to eat. If you don't, I don't care; I'll pull down your underwear." I was raised in a religious Jewish home.
