Commuting to college

During my freshman year of college, I tried to have what I thought would be the complete college experience: I lived in a dorm with a less-than-ideal roommate, dealt with loud neighbors, ate sub-par meals and read texts for countless hours at my small, poorly lit desk. And I did all this while living in the same town I grew up in. I know it probably sounds strange that I paid to dorm at school when I could easily live at home and save money.

OPINION

Dormoralizing

During my senior year of high school, my math teacher begged those who were staying local for college not to dorm. He told us it was a moneymaking scam that universities would tout as essential to the "college experience" and that you weren't missing out if you commuted the 15 minutes from your house to campus. Because I was a stubborn 18-year-old who thought she just had to live on her own, I decided to dorm for the first two years of my college career.

Comme des Carson

Editor's note: This article is a satire piece. It is not to be taken literally. 'Carson' is a pen name. Dear Carson,

Admiration for 'Cuse nation

I am a die-hard Syracuse Orange basketball fan. I was born and raised in 'Cuse and am proud to say one of the happiest moment of my life was in sixth grade (2003) when the Orange won the National Championship. Lately, I haven't been so happy.

OPINION

Practice what you preach

I think we all can agree on this: covering up a series of sexual abuses is not only inexcusable, but also a serious matter that needs to be dealt with immediately. Apparently, the Catholic Church makes exceptions. Earlier this year, The Los Angeles Times revealed a sexual abuse cover up by Cardinal Roger Mahony of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles that spanned over 25 years. In private memos that were recently released to the public, it's clear Mahony made an effort to conceal child molestation by priests from law enforcement, even going so far as moving priests outside the state of California to avoid litigation.

"The Height of the problem

What will it take to get a response? What will it take for students, faculty and, most importantly, the administration to pay attention to what's right in front of their eyes? I walked into the UB Council meeting on Monday morning expecting to hear at least one council member ask President Tripathi and Dennis Black about The Spectrum's latest press.

OPINION

Parents just don't understand

In the world's worst edition of misheard lyrics, we have a school receptionist and one of the most famous television theme songs of all time.

Letter to the Editor

I have to say that I'm very pleased to see the University Heights finally in the spotlight. This neighborhood hasn't lived up to its potential in years past, and I feel confident that we are approaching a transitional period.

OPINION

Calm before the storm

There is an authenticity in college sports, a tradition that is made apparent every time there is an upset. Fans who witness upsets in person anticipate a time in their team's history when they will have the opportunity to storm the court in celebration. Last season, our basketball fans were able to storm the court following a victory against Bowling Green that gave Buffalo a triple bye to the MAC semifinals.

Desperation in the Big Apple

The New York Knicks have been in a free fall over the last 10 weeks. Though they once held the reins as the top team in the Eastern Conference, they have now become a seemingly mediocre team. They started the season 18-5, hitting over 12 threes per game.

Letter from the Editor

We have our answer. Sort of. In case you missed Wednesday's issue of The Spectrum, let me explain today's front page: It is UB President Satish Tripathi's response to the students who are demanding answers about the university's involvement (or the lack thereof) in the University Heights.

OPINION

"Dear President Tripathi,"

We are tired of one-sided conversations and unanswered phone calls, of turned cheeks and of the ticking time bomb that is the University Heights. So today, we want to make a deal: We are reserving Friday's front page for you.

OPINION

The Distinguished Speaker effect

UB is cursed. Or, rather, the Distinguished Speakers Series is. Over the past four years, I've had countless people tell me that only bad things happen to those who visit during the annual Distinguished Speakers Series.
