Hearts for happiness

Money can assuage the material problems we encounter in day-to-day life, like paying rent, filling our car up with gas or buying groceries for the week, but it most certainly cannot help with our relationships or become something meaningful we devote our lives to. But I don't think I'm telling you anything you didn't already know. I've had a hunch that America at large no longer sees wealth as integral to happiness for a while now. Rather, I think our perceived sense of happiness is becoming increasingly determined by our lives constructed on social media sites. Generations just after World War II experienced the beginning of mass consumerism as the economy expanded and technology progressed.

Public more interested in scandal than discrimination

The mainstream media has had a nearly two-week run with the Donald Sterling story, stocking public ire and lambasting the beleaguered billionaire. The Los Angeles Clippers owner became embroiled in controversy recently after TMZ released overtly racist comments recorded by his (presumably now ex-) girlfriend.

Illegal A's

Finals week is typically a time of heavy coffee consumption and late-night library sessions, but Adderall use is rapidly becoming a more recognized aspect of the most stressful week of the semester. Use of 'good grade pills' is surging across the nation's top universities.

It's time to kill the death penalty

The death penalty is slowly dying - not because of legal challenges or moral opposition to the practice, per se, but because the tools of the trade are increasingly unavailable. The latest in a string of contentious executions came this week when the state of Oklahoma carried out the death penalty on convicted rapist and murderer Clayton Lockett. A striking trend of using new drugs to execute prisoners has overshadowed executions throughout the year.

"A violation of law, duty and trust"

A 22-year-old from Williamsville lies face down, subdued and handcuffed on the sidewalk. A Buffalo police officer stands over the man and repeatedly kicks and slaps him.

Letter to the Editor

I am responding to The Spectrum's April 23 article titled "Let's talk about geese babies." When I first saw the headline, I was pleased, thinking it was an article meant to: inform people that geese are protected by federal law, create understanding that this is a time when geese are especially protective of their young and state what people can do to avoid aggression. Though one may glean some of that from the article, I was disappointed and surprised by all the harsh negativity which accompanied it; people describing the geese as "malicious," "a nuisance" and "vicious." I'd like to respond to some of the negativity with a different point of view, which I think many likely share with me. I work in the Ellicott Complex and consider myself lucky to be in an environment that has so much nature around it.

"Inspiration, not idolization"

Who do you want to be when you grow up? When I was 4, I wanted to be a Disney princess. I didn't really mind which one; any of them would have satisfied my na??ve little mind. Then when I was 9, I wanted to be Mary-Kate Olsen (or Ashley, I'm still not entirely sure). At 13 it was Shakira, and at 15 it was Miley Cyrus. Did you see anything wrong in that first question?

From cheering to jeering

The Buffalo Jills have been less cheery following a lawsuit and suspension of all activities last week. Stejon Productions, the company that runs the squad, suspended all activities for the Jills, cheerleaders for the Buffalo Bills, following a lawsuit filed against the Bills and company by five former Jills.

A new election calls for new regulations

The University Council Elections Committee voided the results of the UB Council student representative election on Friday, citing inappropriate use of power by current University Council Student Representative Daniel Ovadia as well as a potential leak of the election results.

"One step forward, one step back"

The Student Association Assembly and Senate passed conflicting amendments simultaneously expanding and limiting the power of UB student voters. The Assembly voted to revise its election guidelines Wednesday, designating that presidential and vice presidential candidates run on separate ballots.

For many students, this is the time of year for anxiety surrounding getting a job, an internship or into graduate school.

The U.S. isn't ready for race-blind admissions

The Supreme Court upheld Michigan's statewide ban on affirmative action in its public universities on Tuesday, once again reviving the debate over the necessity and effectiveness of the practice. The 6-2 ruling itself was arguably a statement on voters' and states' rights - had they ruled against the ban, the Court would have been overturning a proposal already passed by Michigan voters.

OPINION

Clicking your rights away

The running joke that nobody reads those omnipresent, novel-length "Terms and Conditions" just got a lot less funny. General Mills, the corporate behemoth behind brands like Yoplait and Bisquick and cereals including Cheerios and Cinnamon Toast Crunch, updated its privacy policy to impose what legal experts call "forced arbitration" on consumers.

"""The Real World"""

Lilacs hardly breed in Buffalo, but T. S. Eliot got it right when he wrote that April is the cruelest month. Tantalizing whispers of spring are spastically punctuated with precipitation in our fair city.

"Mr. Trump, you're ... hired?"

After eyeing New York's gubernatorial race, billionaire Donald Trump has set his sights on a new competition. The list of celebrities considering a bid for the Buffalo Bills franchise, which is now on the market after owner Ralph Wilson passed away on March 25, continues to grow.
