The decline of the novel

When was the last time you read a book for pleasure? Books are a diminishing form of relaxation – Netflix, Hulu and the variety of other streaming services that provide entertainment in a couple clicks overshadow novels. With little time to relax, students find themselves looking for the simplest way to ease their minds – little do they know, a book is an entire new world.

Decision to replace Sabres' head coach Ted Nolan obvious, intelligent

With the pursuit of a last place finish successfully concluded, the Sabres are now guaranteed a chance to select either Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel, the two most promising talents in the NHL right now, in this year’s draft. With the firing of current head coach Ted Nolan, the team also has the opportunity to hire a new coach of similar caliber.

Letter to the editor

The Spectrum’s April 9 article, “The Parking Game: Parking Struggles on UB’s Campuses” by Emma Janicki and Sushmita Gelda should be a wake-up call to all members of the UB community that the individual and collective actions we all take in driving to campus are adversely affecting each other and our personal health.

Celoron loves Lucy, but not her statue's face

The recent furor over a far-from-picturesque statue of famed comedian Lucille Ball has made it beyond clear that the village of Celoron, the childhood home of the actress, still loves Lucy. The uproar, which ultimately made it onto CNN and Fox News, started as many viral protests tend to do – with a Facebook page. From Facebook to front pages, the community’s outrage has taken on a life of its own and blown a minor issue out of proportion.

Feminism is not a dirty word

What is your first reaction when you hear the word ‘feminism?’ Maybe you cringe or roll your eyes. Maybe you’re apprehensive to read this column. Or maybe you’re like me, and know that ‘feminism’ is not cringe-worthy; it’s actually a movement that deserves to be embraced. Feminism: the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social and economic equality to men.

Rolling Stone’s attempts at apology for misreported UVA article cannot repair inaccurate reporting

Last November, Rolling Stone published “A Rape on Campus,” a feature story about the alleged violent gang rape of a University of Virginia student at a fraternity on campus. Instead of generating much-needed discussions about sexual assault and safety on college campuses, the article has garnered attention for the poor, unethical journalistic practices of Rolling Stone.

Exploring the backdoor

According to the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behaviors, 34 percent of men and 16 percent of women reported having anal sex with their casual partners of an opposite sex.

Cuomo's travel ban on Indiana includes UB Athletics

The University and its Athletics program are joining the ranks of organizations and individuals making a stand against Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which arguably legalized discrimination before it was amended Thursday evening.

OPINION

Dealing with depression

As anyone who has been depressed or has been close with a depressed friend knows, depression is an everyday struggle. It isn’t just feeling sad. It’s feeling like all of your energy has been sapped out of you, feeling like you’re worthless, that you’re letting everyone around you down. It’s struggling to remember what it was like to ever be happy. It’s barely being able to do the minimum.
