SA Assembly Elects 2003-04 Speaker

After four rounds of voting, Adam Sherlip, a business administration and communication major, was elected to the position of speaker of the Student Association Assembly for the 2003-04 school year at Tuesday's assembly meeting.

Buffalo's Economic Restoration

Tuesday, the Niagara Frontier Transit Authority, the city of Buffalo, Erie County and an outside commercial real estate developer announced plans to build an 80-acre amusement park on Outer Harbor land.According to the April 15 issue of the Buffalo News, the park would be partially outdoors and partially indoors, enclosed by a dome.

Two events that took place in February are now impacting how Buffalonians get their late-night entertainment.After 99 people died at a Great White show in Warwick, R.I., and 21 died - with many more injured - trying to escape a fight at a Chicago, Ill., nightclub, increased governmental regulation has impacted nightly entertainment spots across the country.

"Celebrating the Thai New Year, UB Style"

On the same day as the Thai New Year, the Graduate Student Association Thai International Club held its sixth annual "Thai Night" on Monday, using traditional food, music and dance to entertain and enlighten the participants.According to Methee Chiewanichakorn, president of the Thai International Club and a graduate student at UB, this year's Thai Night improved on the previous two celebrations, which only featured traditional Thai food.

Cross town rival Canisius College visits the confines of UB Softball Stadium this afternoon for a doubleheader that will showcase two of the top pitchers in the Western New York area.The Bulls bring an 11-14 overall (3-6 Mid-American Conference) record up against the Canisius Golden Griffins.

Winners of the Milton Plesur Awards Announced

The students have spoken, and the winners of the 2003 Milton Plesur Awards are in.At the Student Association Assembly meeting on Tuesday, Les Skolnik, SA student affairs director, announced that Kushal Bhardwaj, adjunct instructor of African American studies; James Holmes, professor of economics; Barbara Sherman, teaching assistant professor of computer science and engineering; Kenneth Takeuchi, professor of inorganic chemistry; and Bernard Weinstein, professor of physics, were this year's winners.Two of the recipients are repeat winners; Taeuchi won the award in 1985, 1989, and 1997, while Holmes received the award in 1996.According to the SA Web site, the Milton Plesur awards - named after a UB history professor who died in 1987 - are given to undergraduate instructors "who have inspired, excited or had a positive and memorable effect" on their students.Each year, undergraduates can nominate a professor who they feel has had a positive impact on their academic experience at UB.

Preview Day Draws Largest Crowd in Years

UB hosted nearly 1,800 prospective students and their families Saturday as part of the annual Preview Day, which gives admitted students a chance to tour the university's facilities and talk to current students.According to estimates from the Office of Admissions, the approximately 4,600 guests made up the largest turnout to the event in several years.

An Undergraduate Directorial Debut

Today marks the first time in recent memory that a UB undergraduate student will have had his own movie screened without the aid of any faculty.Michael Arisohn, a sophomore media study major with a strong interest in the film industry, will show his feature film, "Summer of a Veil," tonight at 8 p.m.

Students Sound Off about Cultural Diversity at UB

Judging from the Student Association's 19 international student clubs, cultural diversity is a substantial aspect of student life at UB.Akosua Osei-Mensah, secretary of the African Student Association said her club hosts events to which students of all ethnicities are invited and encouraged to attend."We have events, hair shows and fashion shows.
