Usually, it would be strange to see the bottom halves of two or three people extending down from the ceiling of the Ellicott Complex. However, taking a few steps towards them reveals that their top halves are in the process of putting the finishing touches on the lighting and speakers of Perk's Coffee House, the latest addition to the Ellicott Food Court -- and still a bit of a work in progress.Perk's began with a study conducted in early 1998 by an affiliate of Marriott International, Inc., just after the arrival of the Faculty Student Association Executive Director Mitch Green."The idea for Perk's came about as part of the research we did several years ago when we were developing the Ellicott Food Court," said Green.
If Marquis Woolford's choice of apparel is any indication of the objectives of the Hip Hop SA, UB can be prepared to get an ear and eyeful from the HHSA this year.A button on his shirt states, "I am the future of America - be afraid, be very afraid." According to Woolford, the president of the HHSA, the "Know your roots" printed bolded across his t-shirt can speak for his organization."'Know your roots' - that's what Hip Hop is about," he said.
It's official, the Bulls have hit rock bottom. The Bulls were ranked No. 1 on ESPN.com's Bottom 10 this week.
I was surprised when I looked at the Spectrum's article "SA Scales Back Communication with Campus Media" on Wednesday, Sept 3, 2003, and found that SA had changed its interview policy, insisting that they take questions in the form of e-mail instead of granting face-to-face interviews.
Lindsay Matikosh is a very intense athlete. Even when speaking about the sport, she could go on without edging.
The Bulls got three from one and used some tight "D" to earn their second victory of the season by coasting past Niagara (1-2-0) Wednesday night in a 3-0 shutout.
It may look like it's just a gaping hole in the lawn next to the Jacobs Management Center, filled with piles of rubble, bulldozers and dumpsters - but University officials envision a state-of-the-art addition to UB's rapidly evolving campus, as well as a step towards serious philanthropic donations.
Welcome back, everybody, to another fun-filled UB semester. By this time, you all should have received your final flurry of syllabi, outlining which hoops you have to jump through for the next four months to get your three credits and - depending on how well you complete the required tricks - a decent grade.Outlined somewhere in your syllabus is also an attendance policy for the class.
John Gorman's solo performance last Saturday night was three hours of solid acoustic music. The senior psychology major performed his first solo show at Stimulance, a Main Street coffeehouse.Confidence exuded from Gorman as he entertained the audience with original songs and quirky humor.
When it comes to music royalty - Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Madonna and James Brown come to mind - few can play an intimate concert like the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.Closing the New Melody Fair's summer season with a big bang last Friday night, Franklin proved that legends do not need football stadiums or hockey arenas to put on a great show. The first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the winner of 15 Grammy Awards, including a 1990 Living Legends Award, Franklin breezed through a short - but sweet - set of some of her most famous songs.
This year's extensive state budget cuts, a 26 percent SUNY tuition hike and an increased student enrollment rate are all having far-reaching affects on UB students and faculty alike. These factors, combined with the loss of two prominent professors, have placed the English department in a delicate situation; however, many administrators say that the department is holding its own, for now."We are doing very well, well as can be expected given budget downturns," said Robert Newman, associate professor and director of undergraduate studies in English.
The Student Association has announced that it has changed its formal interviewing policy with all campus publications to exclude most verbal communication with campus reporters and editors.Under the new policy, which was delivered Friday to The Spectrum office in a memo and takes effect immediately, all questions for SA executive board members or their staff must be submitted in writing and subsequently answered via e-mail.
What began as a steamy summer day, somewhere in the depths of the Florida farm fields, soon turned into the most horrific nightmare the town of Bannon has ever experienced.Cross Freddy Kruger with the Predator, give him wings and send him on a night-long rampage, terrorizing high school students as he pleases; this is Jeepers Creepers.
Last week, members of Congress said it was unlikely they would approve emergency funding to bail out the struggling AmeriCorps program.AmeriCorps, a national non-profit organization that uses federal funding to subsidize the costs of college education in exchange for volunteer work, will have to run with just 40 percent of its traditional manpower this year if Congress chooses not to take action.
Responding to fiscal problems and mismanagement within the organization, Congress is likely to cut funding for AmeriCorps, the federally subsidized group that provides aid, tutoring and assistance to individuals and families in need within the United States.
Buffalo came into this past weekend's Western New York Tournament hoping to come out with some wins in the record column.
PISCATAWAY, NJ - All week leading up to the season opener, UB football head coach Jim Hofher harped that all that you needed to compete in Division I college football was the ability to play "good football."In the first half of Saturday's game at Rutgers, Buffalo did not compete or execute good football, and they then found themselves looking up at a scoreboard that read "Rutgers 21, Buffalo 0."UB would make a strong effort to come back in the third quarter, but their efforts were ultimately derailed in a 24-10 loss at the hands of the Scarlet Knights, bringing their losing streak to a nation-leading11 games dating back to last season."It was a very hard-fought game, and I think both teams showed to be in good condition," said Hofher, whose squad had defeated Rutgers one year earlier for their lone win.

Okay, so maybe paying a quarter for a beer on Thursdays at Molly's, the "no-wiper," and flipping the bird to hicks with confederate flag bumper stickers on the highway are some of the most enjoyable things in life, but nothing compares to what happens this weekend. It's NFL Kickoff weekend!
