A Fond Farewell for Greiner On Last Radio Show

When outgoing President William R. Greiner sat down in a cozy Allen Hall studio for his final "Talk of the University" broadcast, he was greeted by voices familiar to citizens across Western New York.Among the listeners who called the WBFO program Wednesday night were New York's two Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton.Both senators took a break from an all-night legislative marathon on Capitol Hill to praise the outgoing president and wish him good luck.

Capaldi: No Direct Benefit of Tuition Hike

While most State University of New York students noticed this year's $950 tuition increase, the first general tuition increase in seven years, the university has yet to see any benefits, according to Provost Elizabeth Capaldi.Capaldi discussed the struggles of breaking even within the confines of a dropping budget at Wednesday's meeting of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee in Capen Hall.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity at the Latino Bazaar

The sound of dancing feet and the scents of popcorn, cotton candy and spicy food wafted through the Student Union lobby on Wednesday at the eighth annual Latino Bazaar.The theme of the event changes from year to year and has its origins in students' desire to increase cultural awareness around campus, according to Student Life Coordinator Vicki Sapp.

New Major Explores the 'Global Phenomenon' of Asia

The Asian studies program at UB is now offering a major in addition to its minor, in hopes of letting students take a closer look at the distinct intricacies of Asian culture.The Asian studies program was established in 1993, according to director Thomas Burkman, an expert on Japanese history.

GSA Kicks Off Computer Tutoring Program

Friday the Graduate Student Association kicked off over a month of free computer training sessions that officials say will help graduate students with their research by providing programming skills.The training sessions cover four different computer programming applications - Matlab, C, C++ and Visual Basic - and take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in 139 Hochstetter Hall.

New Coffee House 'Perks' Up Ellicott Food Court

Usually, it would be strange to see the bottom halves of two or three people extending down from the ceiling of the Ellicott Complex.However, taking a few steps towards them reveals that their top halves are in the process of putting the finishing touches on the lighting and speakers of Perk's Coffee House, the latest addition to the Ellicott Food Court -- and still a bit of a work in progress.Perk's began with a study conducted in early 1998 by an affiliate of Marriott International, Inc., just after the arrival of the Faculty Student Association Executive Director Mitch Green."The idea for Perk's came about as part of the research we did several years ago when we were developing the Ellicott Food Court," said Green.
