Close Encounters of the Heavy Kind
By MICHAEL LESLIE | Feb. 2, 2004In a battle of Mid-American Conference heavyweights, the Buffalo Bulls and Ohio Bobcats found themselves involved in a closely contested encounter as they entered the final match on Sunday afternoon in Alumni Arena.In fitting fashion, it came down to the heavyweights themselves, UB's Greg Thomas and Ohio's Jeremiah Beltran, to determine the winner of the MAC showdown.With the Bulls up 16-14 over OU, Thomas and Beltran took to the mat for the match that would decide the afternoon's outcome.Thomas and the Bulls would finally go down in overtime, and Ohio snared a close fought 17-16 victory from UB.

By DANIEL GVERTZ | Feb. 2, 2004Having all the momentum in the world generally spells victory for the team in possession of it come the end of a basketball game.Saturday afternoon in Bowling Green, the UB women's basketball had that impetus as they were able to overcome a 15-point deficit and take a four-point lead in the waning stages of the game with the Falcons going 0-12 from the field in the final 10 minutes of play.But once again, UB's inability to keep their opponents off of the offensive glass hindered them and cost them what would have been a hard-fought victory.Bowling Green's Ali Mann hit two free throws to lift the Falcons (12-6, 5-2 Mid-American Conference) over the Bulls (4-13, 2-5 MAC) with only 23 seconds remaining giving the Falcons the 64-63 victory."I thought it was a well-fought game by both teams," said Buffalo head coach Cheryl Dozier.

"Aging Gracefully, Baryshnikov Sells Out UB"

The patrons at the Center for the Arts Friday and Saturday nights were dressed to the nines for two rare appearances by dance legend Mikhail Baryshnikov.The CFA presented two sold-out performances of "Solos with Piano or not ... An Evening of Music and Dance." Pianist Pedja Muzijevic accompanied Baryshnikov for the first act of the evening.The entire program consisted of entirely new choreography, including Eliot Feld's "Yazoo," which premiered two nights before Baryshnikov's Friday performance in Holyoke, Mass.In Baryshnikov's first piece, Cesc Gelabert's "In a Landscape," Baryshnikov utilized unusual movements with his arms and legs, outstretching his limbs to emphasize John Cage's melancholic music.
