Lower Endowments Stem From Uncertain Economy

UB"s endowment funds didn"t quite measure up to those of other institutions across the country for the 2002-03 school year, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. While endowments at surveyed American institutions rose an average of 3 percent by June 2003, UB took a $10 million hit, dropping 2.5 percent to $378.4 million.

"Among UB Custodians, Union Presence Fading"

The number of unionized custodial workers at UB has been declining steadily since the early 1990s, leading some union leaders on campus to question the hiring practices of the university and call for a return to a fully unionized custodial staff.Union leaders contend the private, non-union cleaners hired by the university over the past decade are not as capable as union employees and are more likely to steal from the areas they clean - claims disputed by university officials, who also cite millions of dollars in savings by not hiring unionized custodial workers.

Double Digit Disaster

Even when not in the blustery confines of Buffalo, the UB women's basketball team cannot escape the cold doldrums that have plagued them over the last few games. The Bulls (4-12, 2-4 Mid-American Conference) shot a dismal 28 percent from the field in the first half and just 31.5 percent for the game on Monday night against the Northern Illinois Huskies in the Convocation Center.Add to that the fact that they were out-rebounded 39-26, and you have the recipe for an ugly 66-47 loss to the conference rival Huskies.NIU (9-9, 4-3 MAC) took advantage of the Bulls interior defense, or lack thereof, with 32 points in the paint, including a pair of double-doubles from Joi Scott and Jennifer Youngblood."They have two great kids inside in Jennifer Youngblood and Joi Scott," said UB head coach Cheryl Dozier.

Not Missing Much: 'The Misanthrope' at the Irish Classical

French dramatist and actor Moliere wrote plays the way he lived - with intensity. In 1675, in the midst of a stage performance, he popped a blood vessel in a fit of coughing and died shortly thereafter. The French ideas of irony and corruption in Moliere's "The Misanthrope" comically uncover a world corrupted by insincerity, shallowness and hypocrisy.Under the direction of UB Theater lecturer Fortunato Pezzimenti, the Irish Classical Theatre Company presents "The Misanthrope" at the Andrews Theater through Feb.

Union Dispute Unfair to Workers

There is no better way to show your appreciation for workers than by exploiting a contract clause to slowly ease them out of service in favor of non-union workers.

Newsprint Dance Party

Every Tuesday afternoon, I return home from my religious studies class around noon and sit down at my desk, throw on one of the Appleseed Cast's records and, via the Internet, talk with my friend Erik about "finding some new hotness" in the wishing well that is music today. The sad thing is that the well often seems straight out of Goonies.

A Relic of the Past

Iran.Nigeria.Saudi Arabia. The Unites States of America. That's a list of every country in the world whose justice systems execute juveniles for crimes they have committed - a list that has been shrinking over the past 10 years, as the governments of Yemen, Pakistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo banned such executions.Hopefully the list will get at least at least one country shorter by next fall, as the U.S.
