History in Song
By DENA-KAY MARTIN | Feb. 2, 2004When Sam Cooke sings to me, he has me "feeling like black is the thing to be," much like how Tupac says the lyrics of Marvin Gaye ignite cultural pride in his 1993 single, "Keep Ya Head Up."Many a friend has walked into my room, enveloped by the smooth, mellow voice of Sam Cooke and snickered at my "old woman music." The club hits are what everyone my age downloads, and though I have my share of those, nothing gets to me more than listening to the voices of men and women who lived in an era where strength of character was tested every second. Each time I hear the opening chords of "A Change is Gonna Come," Sam Cooke's 1964 social commentary, I feel like I was born in the wrong time period.

By DENIS MURADOV | Feb. 2, 2004In the Jan. 28 feedback section of The Spectrum, the supposed "let's not hate" letter by Adam Fosbury only sidesteps the issues and makes it sound like the situation in Israel and Palestine is going to improve if we simply pray for peace.

Incomplete Comeback
By DANIEL GVERTZ | Feb. 2, 2004Having all the momentum in the world generally spells victory for the team in possession of it come the end of a basketball game.Saturday afternoon in Bowling Green, the UB women's basketball had that impetus as they were able to overcome a 15-point deficit and take a four-point lead in the waning stages of the game with the Falcons going 0-12 from the field in the final 10 minutes of play. But once again, UB's inability to keep their opponents off of the offensive glass hindered them and cost them what would have been a hard-fought victory.Bowling Green's Ali Mann hit two free throws to lift the Falcons (12-6, 5-2 Mid-American Conference) over the Bulls (4-13, 2-5 MAC) with only 23 seconds remaining giving the Falcons the 64-63 victory."I thought it was a well-fought game by both teams," said Buffalo head coach Cheryl Dozier.
