Road Woes
By JENNIFER GILLAN | Feb. 9, 2004It was the same old equation for the UB women's basketball team on Saturday in Athens, Ohio.Poor defense plus lackluster rebounding equaled a thorough dismantling. The Ohio Bobcats (9-11, 3-6 Mid-American Conference) jacked up the Bulls (5-14, 3-6 MAC) by a score of 85-65 in a game that they led in by as many as 33 points.
In His Own Defense: Jim Norton at the CFA
By HEATHER NELLIS | Feb. 9, 2004On Saturday night, a small but faithful crowd gathered to hear the standup comedy of Jim Norton. Norton, a regular on Comedy Central's "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn," is on tour to promote his new self-titled CD.Norton's disclaimer on the disc warns that it contains "mean spirited humor and some filthy language." If his CD is anything like his standup, that is putting it quite mildly.Norton began his show making general comments about events of the last year, ranging from Arnold Schwarzenegger's election to the Siegfried and Roy attack to the national blackout. It didn't take long for Norton to begin ripping on different social groups.

UB Wards Off 'My Doom'
By NATIA DAVITI | Feb. 9, 2004Discovered just two weeks ago, the computer virus known as "My Doom" has already managed to infect the computers of over 50 UB students, faculty and staff as well as millions of people worldwide.Mark Ferguson, manager of UB's Computing and Information Technology HelpDesk, said the virus tricks users into opening unsuspicious e-mails, which, when accessed with programs like Microsoft Outlook, will automatically download the virus onto the computer."Once a computer is infected, the virus can scan the machine for any e-mail address that particular computer has been in contact with, then it tries to spread to those addresses by copying itself and sending itself out to those people," Ferguson said. The most perilous aspect of the My Doom virus is that it leaves one person's computer open to use by others through the installation of a program called a backdoor, CIT specialists said."Essentially, if someone knows that you have the virus, it would be like he had the remote control to your computer," Ferguson said. This bug is unique because it damages a computer in more than one way, leading to its four-out-of-five severity rating by Symantec, the company that produces the popular Norton Anti-virus program. The company compares My Doom to other computer viruses in the level of threat it poses, the extent of the damage it does, and the extent of its distribution through the Internet.

"Bortz, Idbihi Lead Savage Beating of Marshall"
By DARREN RIETHMILLER | Feb. 9, 2004Maybe it was the cameras of the Empire Sports Network, the mid-afternoon start or the raucous crowd in Alumni Arena that did it.Whatever it was, the Buffalo Bulls came out of locker room seemingly rejuvenated and unphased by their let down against Eastern Michigan earlier in the week. After letting EMU leave Alumni Arena with an ugly Mid-American Conference win against the Bulls, Buffalo (9-10, 5-6 MAC) head coach Reggie Witherspoon had this to say about his team's mentality coming into the Marshall game: "We asked them going into the game to issue a statement of response to Wednesday night's game," said Witherspoon.
