Underdog Davis Gives Jobs Speech at CFA

Businessman and Democrat Jack Davis, who is facing powerful Republican Tom Reynolds in the race for the 26th District Congressional seat, held a press conference outside the Center For Arts building on Friday to discuss the August jobs report issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.Davis, a 1955 graduate of UB, talked about the realities of the job market that college graduates face."I am concerned whether there will be any jobs for these students when they graduate," he said. The report showed that 144,000 jobs became available, missing its expected goal by 6,000 positions.Hitting the predicted number of 150,000 jobs was considered by the Bureau to be necessary in order for the economy to keep up with the pace of population growth."When we should have been creating 6.6 million jobs, we lost 1.1 million, and the jobs we are creating are low paying and require no skill," Davis said.

Men's Soccer Starts Off on the Right Foot

The UB men's soccer struck early and never looked back as they defeated Colgate (0-1-0) in their season opener by a final of 3-0 at RAC Field on Wednesday night. The 2004 version of the Bulls looked nothing like the team that last year was shut out in the final seven games."All that work over the summer paid off," said Assistant coach Dave Hesch as he gave sophomore Erik Jaanimagi a congratulatory hug.Just a third of the way through the first half, Andrew Butler sent a long cross deep into Colgate's zone to set up Braden Byler for the first of his two goals, putting the Bulls on the board for the first time this year.Byler was active in only three games last year.

Volleyball Hopes to Keep Building

Take a little veteran leadership, add some freshman attitude, and you've got the UB volleyball team. The Bulls hope to build on their momentum from last year, when they won their first road match in the Mid-American Conference, and five MAC matches in total, a program record.Last year, the team surpassed their kill total from the previous season and also managed to commit fewer errors while simultaneously winning more MAC contests, as well as more overall contests, than they did in previous years. Not only did those statistics improve, but several players were also recognized with individual honors.

Get Away from Buffalo

With three-day weekend vacations, festive parades and holiday retail sales, it might be difficult to imagine why the "L" in Labor Day doesn't instead stand for "leisure." While some students might lament not celebrating in their hometown with family or - for New York City folks - gallivanting in Labor Day parades, kicking back in Western New York or her neighbor to the north, Canada, might be quite a consolation prize.Niagara-on-the-Lake, in Southern Ontario, is a trendy resort town on the banks of the scenic Niagara River.

"'Baaaaa,' says Frank"

Many of you will probably know what I'm talking about when I use the term "LJ-cut." In fact, more students would probably be able to identify Frank the Goat in a line of suspects than Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. But if you don't happen to know the goat of which I speak and his mystical ability to take the young-adult nation by storm, I'm referring to the Web site Livejournal.com, a modern subculture unto itself. An online blogging community, Livejournal provides its users with a personal journal where they can broadcast their private thoughts and feelings on the Web to whomever they please.Other websites, such as blogger.com and diaryland.com also provide online journals, and many websites (deadjournal.com, ujournal.org) are spawns of the LJ phenomenon, but Livejournal rings truest both for its setup and originality. One of the great things about Livejournal is the extent of creativity it allows each user to express.

A Bit Better

A fourth quarter touchdown with 7:52 remaining in the game by Eastern Michigan's Chris Talley proved to be the deciding factor in the University at Buffalo's first MAC football game of the 2004 season, as EMU narrowly defeated UB 37-34 in what otherwise was a very even game between two comparable, though much improved football teams."This is a very disappointing result-not discouraging," said UB head coach Jim Hofher.
