After listening to Fear Before the March of Flames's debut album, "Odd How People Shake," it became conceivable that an equally impressive sophomore effort could solidify the band's status near the top of the hardcore music scene.It has done so.Actually, call it "progressive hardcore." Much in the vein of Dillinger Escape Plan and Every Time I Die, Fear Before experiments with time signatures and eclectic riffs, the latter courtesy of guitarist Adam Fisher.

UB Students Against Sweatshops started the semester Tuesday night with a crowd of new and anxious students hoping to build on the group's progress of last year, when it petitioned for UB to join various workers' rights organizations.This year's Students Against Sweatshops members plan to focus their efforts on the Worker's Rights Consortium, an international monitoring organization that focuses on keeping universities informed of the conditions in the factories where their apparel is manufactured."Our vision is to work with this organization and others to form solidarity in creating a sweatshop free campus," said Jessica Carrancio, a junior math and Spanish major.According to Students Against Sweatshops, the Worker's Rights Consortium generates codes of conduct between companies and universities that include paying legal minimum wages, the necessity of a labor union, and worker compensation.In 2002, 13 schools -- including Notre Dame, New York University and Ohio State -- dropped their contracts with New Era, citing the apparel company's manufacturing policies.

Student Life has proposed a plan to rearrange services in the Student Union to better suit the needs of the students, according to Associate Director of Student Life David Ballard."We're trying to bring in as many services as possible to improve facilitation to students and bring them to one central place for their basic needs," said Ballard.The arrangement is currently being reviewed and it is likely to go into effect in the spring of 2005.According to Ballard, a new health center would be provided on the ground floor of the Student Union in Suite 114."Health and safety issues are high on the agenda," said Ballard.
After threatening to pull all its money from Sub-Board I, Inc. in the latest of a series of organizational clashes, the Student Association has reduced the funds it pays annually towards the student corporation by $70,000 this year by negotiating for a uniform fee during the summer.Prior to the uniform fee, each full-time UB undergraduate paid $9.42 per semester to Sub-Board through SA, while graduate students paid $6.20 through the Graduate Student Association.
