Men's RugbyBuffalo's Mad Turtles defeated Cornell by a score of 15-5 and took possession of first place in Division I of the New York State Rugby Conference.Cornell applied a lot of pressure early in the match, and found itself as close as the five-meter line, but could not come away with any points, as Buffalo's back-line of defense was able to stop them.The Turtles were able to counter Cornell's considerable size advantage by keeping the ball in motion and not letting them set up, thus forcing them to cover the width of the field, and not just the length.

Intramural Sports at UB: Exchanging Competitiveness for Camaraderie

Late in the evening, when very few students are roaming the halls of the academic and athletic buildings, a select group of students can be found in the depths of Alumni Arena, jumping and yelling as if their lives depend upon it.On any given weeknight any number of the approximately 8,000 intramural sports registrants, playing any of the 12 intramural sports offered by the Department of Recreation and Intramural Services.Abe Robinson, senior psychology and communication major said he looks forward to his Thursday night basketball games."It gives students something to do away from class," he said.

Ketter Hall Earthquake Lab Breaks Ground

While the country is fascinated by recent volcanic tremors surrounding Mount St. Helens, there is a different kind of rumble these days coming from UB's Ketter Hall.According to department officials, UB's Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory continues to break new ground each year in earthquake analysis, and the addition of a new simulator will re-enforce the program as a world leader in its field.Operations director Andrei Reinhorn called UB's program "the most rounded program in the world," and said its high status means more students, faculty, and degrees offered with "enhanced educational possibilities."Reinhorn, a principal investigator on the project, stressed that the real purpose of the program is to research protective systems for earthquake disaster prevention."It's a lot more than that.

Activists Face Chilly Night

UB's Community Action Corps got a taste of the chilly winter nights facing Buffalo's homeless residents Saturday when they spent the night in the courtyard behind the Student Union.The group's Night Out to Fight Homelessness, co-sponsored by Circle K, raised about $400 while challenging students to camp out in the 40-degree weather for 12 hours with only their warm clothing and cardboard boxes."I see a lot of people caring about the cause, and I see a lot of people being enthusiastic.

Men's Soccer Blanked In Weekend Games

The UB men's soccer team opened the Mid-American Conference portion of their 2004 schedule with two losses this weekend.The Bulls (6-4-1, 0-1 MAC) lost to Akron and Kentucky the weekend after a hazing incident that caused four practices to be cancelled, three players to be suspended, and one player to be hospitalized.Without the services of Braden Byler, their leading goal scorer, the Bulls were shut out 1-0 by Akron.
