UB students hold candlelight vigil for Las Vegas shooting victims

Students gathered Tuesday night outside the Student Union for a candlelight vigil for the victims of the Route 91 Harvest Festival. On Oct. 1, a shooter opened fire on concertgoers from the thirty-second floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, overlooking the Las Vegas Strip. At least fifty-eight people were killed and close to 500 were injured before the gunman shot and killed himself. The attack is the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. modern history, according to CNN.

Campus Steering committee seeks student input on Global Market Cafe Students and faculty are invited to share their input on the global market cafe with members of the steering committee, according to UBNow. The focus groups are open to the campus and will take place at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.


A student in the department of anthropology analyzes skeletal remains. The remains were unearthed after a construction crew discovered human remains from a nineteenth century gravesite on UB's South Campus.

UB to hold re-burial ceremony for remains uncovered by construction

A reinterment ceremony will be held on Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. in the Newman Center that will culminate nearly a decade worth of research into the remains of late-nineteenth and early twentieth-century persons buried in the Erie County Poorhouse Cemetery on Bailey Avenue. The ceremony commemorates the lives of 372 people buried in the Erie County Poorhouse Cemetary on Bailey Avenue.

Male points handgun at woman on Winspear Avenue

Two women reported they were approached by two unknown males at approximately 1:10 a.m. Sunday near South Campus, according to a UB Alert. Buffalo Police are investigating the incident, which took place on Winspear Avenue near Rotary Road. One of the suspects pointed a silver handgun at one of the women. The suspects reportedly fled East toward Bailey Avenue. The victims described subject who brandished the gun as a male, 18 to 20 years old and roughly 5 feet 2 inches tall. The victims were unable to describe the second subject. The alert urged members of the university community to stay alert, always travel with other people and report on unusual activity or suspicious persons to UPD.

Global-inspired dining hall to open in 2020

A new dining hall featuring a variety of authentic international cuisine is set to open in spring 2020. The Global Market Café is the third and final phase of the Heart of the Campus initiative, which was established in 2012. The new dining location will serve as a “front door” to North Campus, connecting Flint Circle to Hamilton, according to Vice Provost for Graduate Education Graham Hammill, who is directing the project.


UB alum Stephen Still announced his $4 million donation to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Thursday morning in Capen Hall.

UB engineering alum donates $4 million to School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

President Tripathi announced at a news conference Thursday morning that UB alum Stephen Still has donated $4 million to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The funds will go toward the Institute for Sustainable Transportation and Logistics, which has been re-named the Stephen Still Institute for Sustainable Transportation and Logistics.  ISTL is a cross-disciplinary initiative led jointly by the engineering and management schools.

Sexual assault reported to University Police

A sexual assault was reported to University Police last Friday, Sept. 29. A Resident Advisor who was told about the sexual assault reported the incident to police. The student did not want to speak with police. This is the third sexual assault reported to UPD in 2017.


GSA’s Interim President Jen Schechter presides over Wednesday’s senate meeting. Schechter was elected at last week’s GSA senate meeting after former President Tanja Aho announced she was incapacitated due to immigration issues.

GSA elects new vice president

Wednesday evening’s GSA Senate meeting did not have the anticipated fireworks that have recently sparked turmoil in the GSA’s student government. Students voted to recognize three new student clubs, approved funds for various student group activities and voted to approve the proposed 2017-18 budget

Graduate Student Employees Union negotiates two percent pay increase

The Graduate Student Employees Union (GSEU) negotiated a two percent increase in pay for all UB graduate employees in the GSEU, according to an email UB Human Resources sent to graduate student employees Wednesday night. The increases will be processed starting with paychecks dated Nov. 1, 2017. Minimum salaries for GSEU employees on full assistantships have been increased to $9,673 for the 2016 to 2017 academic year and $9,764 for the 2017 to 2018 academic year. 


President Tripathi sat down with The Spectrum on Thursday and discussed the Dennis Black scandal, student leadership, auxiliary enterprises and graduate stipends.

Q: Can you describe your specific role at the university? What does a typical work day look like for you? A: There’s no typical day in the life that I can walk you through. The president has a team of people he works with for a lot of different issues on the campus, whether it’s what’s going on in the academic side of the house, the business side. But the main job for the president really is that everything’s going right and that there are enough resources to do it...And then of course, anything that goes wrong is my job.

UB students attend STEM job fair

Wednesday’s UB STEM UP job and internship fair fair ran from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Alumni Arena and focused on giving students in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) majors a chance at networking with prospective employers. This year's fair featured notable companies such as Bloomberg, General Mills, Con Edison, Moog, PepsiCo and many others.

Moving troubles: Medical school staff concerned over parking options downtown

UB is scheduled to open the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences this winter, but UB has not finalized a plan for transporting employees to the new medical campus Members of the United University Profession (UUP) are working alongside “multiple UB units” to find a solution for students and faculty who will be working and studying at the new campus, according to UB Spokesperson John Della Contrada.


TEDxBuffalo is an independently run, affiliate of TED Talks. TEDxBuffalo announced its 2017 lineup, featuring several UB community members.

Matthew Schwartz has always loved TEDTalks. A graduate student in the school of social work, Schwartz watches them in many of his classes. When a friend suggested he apply for Buffalo’s TEDx event, Schwartz submitted a quick pitch on his iPhone and hoped for the best.
