The kids are alright

Parties and college students are killing University Heights. At least that is what Friday's Buffalo News seemed to imply.Somehow the fall of University Heights, once a vibrant neighborhood, is being blamed on UB students, the very people who are the reason it's not completely dead and may even be its salvation.

'Wallace' near flawless

New-age animated films have the unusual ability to appeal to audiences of any age. "Shrek," "Chicken Run" and "Finding Nemo" are all films that had the strange capacity to equally entertain parents, kids, teenagers and college students."Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" follows suit. The film is the fourth installment of the "Wallace and Gromit" series, but is the first to be a full-length motion picture. The story follows the cheese-loving technophile Wallace (Peter Sallis) and his more reasonable partner Gromit the dog as they try to protect the town vegetables from pesky rabbits in the days leading up to the 500th annual Giant Vegetable competition. It's packed with goofy humor for children, along with a few subtle jokes and references to keep older viewers smiling.Directors Steve Box and Nick Park have a real knack for animated humor.

"Two games won, a star lost"

Two conference victories in one weekend is a feat that any team should celebrate without hesitation.Losing a key player in one of those games puts a damper on the bliss. The UB men's soccer team hosted Mid-American Conference games Friday and Sunday at UB Stadium and during Friday's 4-0 defeat of Bowling Green, sophomore forward Lee Catchpole went down with a head injury after a collision and did not suit up for Sunday's 1-0 victory over Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne.Catchpole's condition and possible return could not be confirmed by head coach John Astudillo following Sunday's game."I don't know when he will be back until he sees a specialist (Monday) morning at 10 a.m.," Astudillo said.

Basketball starts season practices in 'Prime Time' style

The UB men's and women's basketball players opened their seasons on Friday to all the usual fanfare of open scrimmages, shooting contests and a night of fan-oriented fun, but unlike last year's Midnight Madness, this year just didn't have the, well, madness the athletics department was hoping for.NCAA rules used to state that teams were only allowed to start their first practices of the season before midnight on a certain date, which at many colleges led to the Midnight Madness tradition. But a change in the rules now allowed the practices to start earlier.

"'Rent' soundtrack too perfect, too soon"

Like a movie rendition that steals passion and imagination from the book, the movie soundtrack to "Rent" steals the emotion from the original Broadway show soundtrack.Back in 1996, when "Rent" hit Broadway, the play became one of the biggest fads in the New York City area.

"Music lost, nothing gained"

Possibly for the first time, video didn't kill the radio star. But that's because the members of The Sun aren't radio stars yet. After producing two EPs and opening for bands such as the Flaming Lips, Ambulance LTD., RX, Hot Hot Heat and Ok Go, The Sun should know to stick to music.Instead of the normal CD that listeners can buy and play instantly, The Sun decided to make "Blame It On the Youth," their debut album, a full-length DVD of music videos. The DVD contains a mix of videos ranging from Weezer-like dramas to simple tapings of performances.
