UB eco-friendlier with hydrogen cars

It may be a long time before current freshmen see their grandchildren driving in pollution-free hydrogen cars, but UB is already taking a step towards that future.To meet federal and state laws, UB will be finalizing a deal this month to purchase two new hydrogen vehicles."The university feels strongly that we should be taking the lead in environmentally safe products," said John Hayes, assistant director of buildings and grounds.Federal law requires that 75 percent of new purchases be alternatively fueled and energy efficient under the 1992 Environmental Protection Act.

Heights police ready for Halloween weekend

City and campus police officials say they are prepared for the party-heavy Halloween weekend, especially in the University Heights where police have been cracking down all semester."Halloween weekend has traditionally been one of the greater party weekends, and we're ready for it," said Mark Antonio, police chief of the E district that includes the Heights.Antonio declined to say whether Buffalo Police would have a greater presence than usual for this coming weekend."We're going to be out there and we're going to be observing," he said.Antonio added that although Halloween weekend is known for its rowdiness, it remains a routine weekend for his officers."(It's) the same precautions we've been taking every weekend," he said.

Ross 'forces' laughter at the CFA

The Center for the Arts looked like it was hosting a "Star Wars" convention Monday night, with fans adorned in costume eagerly anticipating the rapid-fire delivery of showman Charles Ross.Attendees poured in to see a one-man rendition of their favorite movie that they're likely to remember.Before the show began, characters from "Star Wars Episode IV," "V," and "VI" were taking pictures in full costume.

"Love, set and match for Bulls at ITA Regionals"

Before you can be the best, you have to beat the best.The ITA Regional tournament at Dartmouth hosted 128 of the top tennis players throughout the Northeast over the weekend.UB sent three representatives to the event, with junior Mike Rockman representing the Bulls in singles while the formidable pair of Yules Hadisubroto and Nikesh Singh Panthlia took on the doubles competition."We had a great weekend," said Nick Zieziula, assistant head coach.

Four months after President John Simpson said he would like to increase both UB's faculty and enrollment, Provost Satish Tripathi has announced plans to hire 110 new faculty members over the next three years.Tripathi made the plans officially public in an Oct.
