McWilliams eyes MLB
By JEFF DRAZEK | Mar. 10, 2006Although senior Sean McWilliams has hopes of being selected in this year's Major League Baseball draft, and many feel he has a legitimate chance of realizing that dream, he doesn't spend all his free time perfecting his pitching repertoire. When not on the diamond, McWilliams, a scratch golfer, can most likely be found on the green mastering his golf stroke, playing ping pong, or conquering a new video game."I love golf.

Library late fees get overdue reform
By MATT MILLER | Mar. 10, 2006Whether blocking students out of course registration or lightening an undergrad's wallet, library late fees can prove just as costly as a semester's textbook bill.In response to increasing frustration, library officials will be looking to new reforms this summer -- including timely e-mail notification of overdue books -- to help students avoid fees and to keep library resources accessible, rather than lost under dorm room beds.Students said this development is long overdue, especially considering UB's late fees are among the highest in the SUNY system. With the latest improvements, students will be able to view current loans of UB material online, and e-mail notifications will help lenders dodge nightmarish late fees.

UBSAS talks trash in the Student Union
By ROBERT PAPE | Mar. 8, 2006In a scene reminiscent of mailmen carrying in bag after bag of mail in "Miracle on 34th Street," protestors from UB Students Against Sweatshops traded sacks of letters for wrappers and old newspapers in an effort to prove what they consider an injustice done to sub-contracted janitorial workers hired by the university."We'd like to let everyone know how much trash is left in our lecture halls," said Rachel Wilson, a junior sociology major, via megaphone to students and workers at tables in the Student Union Tuesday at noon.

By any means necessary
By MIKE FLATT | Mar. 8, 2006"It's never too early for a faggot joke. Too bad we have a faggot in the front row."There's something that would stop the person who made this statement - and it was made in a UB classroom this year - from using the word "nigger": the threat of consequence.Racism is received with zero tolerance, as it should be.
The emerging homosexual presence in film
By KENNETH ILGUNAS | Mar. 8, 2006Over the past few years, gay-themed movies have been coming out of the closet in droves. The first movie that springs to everyone's mind is "Brokeback Mountain," but the truth is that there is currently an influx of similarly themed movies that are making their way into the mainstream in record numbers.
When the dark gets rocking
By ALEXANDER NASAREWSKY | Mar. 8, 2006On the cover of Quasi's newest album, a jagged lion leaps from a boom box. This is an apt metaphor for music that aggressively grabs its prey and does not let go until it has ravaged the listener's senses. The Portland, Oregon-based duo, Quasi has a new album "When the Going Gets Dark," the follow up to 2003's "Hot S***."The duo consists of Janet Weiss, the drummer of Sleater-Kinney and Sam Coomes, who has performed with artist Elliott Smith.
UB shouldn't be a market-driven package
