UB Chair chosen as president of ASA

At an annual conference last Wednesday, Dr. Mark J. Lema, M.D., chair of UB's anesthesiology department and professor for school of medicine was designated president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). One of the most pressing issues at the conference was establishing patient-safety protocol policies when using anesthesia, Lema said.

Lang trades his blues guitar for a gospel choir

After half a decade of wrestling with the fact that he can't impress people with his youth anymore, singer/songwriter/guitarist Jonny Lang has changed from a blues wonder-boy into a pseudo-soulful young man.His fourth studio release since breaking through as a teen guitar-throb in 1997, "Turn Around" is almost a 180-degree spin for the artist.The album mixes a little bit of rock with pop and R&B, recycled to sound like the greatest Backstreet Boys CD or the worst Stevie Wonder LP ever.After the debut "Lie to Me" introduced him as a promising young upstart with vast potential, Lang became a highly sought-after collaborator.

Isiah Thomas deserves a running drop kick to the sternum.He really, really does.And I'm genuinely hoping - no, make that praying - to whatever basketball gods that still pay attention to Knicks basketball that it happens.Maybe one night this season, as the Knicks are being railroaded by the abysmal Atlanta Hawks in Madison Square Garden, one of Isiah's handpicked malcontents decides he's had enough.

Why Buffalo?Students from across the country and around the world move to Buffalo to study at UB, and those native to the Queen City -her freak snowstorms, dreary weather and high sales tax - often wonder one thing: why?But those experiencing Buffalo for the first time say the region isn't dying, and there is plenty to do to stay entertained and well fed.Josh Dubs, a second-year law student, was first introduced to the potential of UB by his aunt and uncle who live in nearby Lancaster.
