Local transformation makes lasting impact on West Side community

Delores Powell sat awake at 3 a.m. in her hotel in Disney World. Back home, more than 6,000 community members were working day and night to rebuild her dream home and transform her entire community. However, Powell's thoughts were focused elsewhere. Instead of worrying about her home at 228 Massachusetts Ave., Powell was concerned with the family whose renovation was put on hiatus, and that local contracting company David Homes was leaving the business of a paying customer on hold. "The contractor that [was] building my house has a business and he must have had work going on when they contacted him [to work on my house]," Powell said.

Within the venue's confines lies an atmosphere that, while dark and cramped, is also warm and welcoming.

Evidence mounts on coral reef extinction

According to the results of a recent UB experiment, the future of the ocean's coral reefs is uncertain, and the beauty of the ocean floor is not the only thing in danger. Mary Alice Coffroth, professor of geological sciences, has conducted a study focused on the question of whether coral reefs would be able to adapt to rising sea temperatures caused by global warming and live on in the future. Coffroth and her collaborators are looking for possible natural solutions to coral bleaching, the process by which coral reefs lose all of the algae they carry.

Take Back the Night began as an attempt to recognize the fear and anxiety that women face when they walk alone at night. UB's SBI Health Education is hosting its annual Take Back the Night event to spread awareness and prevent domestic violence and sexual abuse.
