Spaulding fire allegedly started by butane torch

UB student Alec Seidenberg is accused of dropping a butane torch while smoking marijuana in a Spaulding Building 1, fourth floor room on Thursday night, according to a press release released by the University Police Department. Both Seidenberg and his girlfriend were taken to Erie County Medical Center with minor injuries.

And then I found $5

It was early March, the first day of spring break, and we sat in my car in a nice New Jersey suburb, waiting for the last bus to New York City.

Realizing UB 2020' draft still not enough

On April 12, Provost Charles Zukoski released the second draft of his 'Realizing UB 2020' plan. In theory, this draft, when finalized, will bring monumental changes to how this institution operates, grants degrees and prepares students for life outside the campus; it aims to bring "excellence" to all faculty, staff and students over the next five to 10 years. But, in its current form, the draft still reads as a plan for the plan, with little concrete or tangible evidence of how exactly the university plans to meet its ambitious goals of revitalizing UB and the surrounding Buffalo community. The newest draft includes four institutional goals, which basically stress that UB wants to be bigger and better and wants to be bigger and better than universities all over the world.

Around the world in 20 months

Over the past two years, UB has invested $400,000 in an alumni engagement and fundraising tour. The tour has raised over $8.9 million - over 22 times more than the investment. And it's not over. UB President Satish Tripathi has traveled to nine states and four countries on the tour.

Cognitive scientist Pinker lectures as fifth Distinguished Speaker

Humans are inherently good and inherently violent, and how we act just depends on if the better angel has the upper hand, according to Steven Pinker. Humans have a "better angel" and a "worse angel" within them, and each has a tendency to control human actions - namely the choice to commit acts of peace or acts of violence, he said. And, right now, the better angels are prevailing.

Dormoralizing

During my senior year of high school, my math teacher begged those who were staying local for college not to dorm. He told us it was a moneymaking scam that universities would tout as essential to the "college experience" and that you weren't missing out if you commuted the 15 minutes from your house to campus. Because I was a stubborn 18-year-old who thought she just had to live on her own, I decided to dorm for the first two years of my college career.

"The Height of the problem

What will it take to get a response? What will it take for students, faculty and, most importantly, the administration to pay attention to what's right in front of their eyes? I walked into the UB Council meeting on Monday morning expecting to hear at least one council member ask President Tripathi and Dennis Black about The Spectrum's latest press.
