Knocking the socks off of breast cancer

Around 39,620 American women will not see 2014 because of breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. This fall, a group of determined UB students is hoping to help curb these figures by raising and donating funds to a number of breast cancer charities. The UB women's club lacrosse team is starting a fundraising campaign, selling mid-calf athletic socks - available in pink with a black lacrosse stick or black with a ribbon - for $10 a pair.

UB breaks ground in downtown medical campus

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo believes it is "irrefutable" that Buffalo has changed over the past five years. But he likes what he sees. "You can see it on people's faces - [Buffalo] is not what it was; it is what it could be," he said.

President reaffirms UB 2020 plan

President Satish Tripathi assured the crowd in the Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall that UB is on track to fulfill its goals over the next seven years. "Every day, we continue to elevate our university in excellence, impact and stature," he said. On Friday, Tripathi delivered his annual State of the University Address to an audience of about 150 people.

Parking lot party

Snow hasn't fallen in Buffalo yet, but Schussmeisters Ski Club didn't let that stop them from showing off their tricks Thursday. Over 150 people flooded the parking lot - which was filled with scraped ice from various Buffalo hockey rinks - outside The U on Sweet Home Road.

Sam McMahon voted SA president

Sam McMahon said he isn't one to show a lot of emotion, but after hearing he had won the Student Association's presidential election, his immediate reactions were to pump his fist, kiss his girlfriend and call his parents. McMahon received 1,087 votes, beating Mohammad Alwahaidy, his closest competitor, by 309.

A guide to volunteering in the City of Good Neighbors

If you're interested in helping out the local community, here's a look at only a few of Buffalo's many volunteer options for students. Food Bank of Western New York The Food Bank of WNY has been providing almost 100,000 people per month with food services since 1979. They have open soup kitchens and food pantries for those in need, which are kept open through donations of non-perishable foods.
