Asia Food Market, now the largest Asian market in the region, is stirring excitement within the Asian community at UB. The market, which opened Sept. 21, occupies most of the old Walmart on Niagara Falls Boulevard. The Buffalo location is the owners’s third and largest store. His other locations are in Syracuse and Rochester.

This fall, UB enrolled 4,045 students—the largest freshman class in the SUNY system. The freshman class is made up of 3,709 domestic students and 366 international students. Applications are up 22 percent since 2013, and this year the university received 27,800 applications, the highest number of applications in its history.

SA funds the annual Fall and Spring Fests, Homecoming Carnival and the Fall and Spring Galas. SA allocates funds for off-campus activities including Sabres, AMC and Shea’s tickets and, starting this year, Bills tickets. SA also funds half of the budgets for the roughly 150 student-run clubs and organizations on-campus. The groups have to fundraise for the remainder of their budgets. A portion of the $4.4 million goes towards paying SA staff members.
Matthania Volmy was crowned Miss New York on Aug. 18. She will have the opportunity to attend the National American Miss pageant in Anaheim, California at Disneyland during Thanksgiving week, where she will have the chance to win over $500,000 in cash and prizes.
In early June, President Tripathi signed the Student Preferred Name Policy, allowing students to enter their preferred first or middle name into HUB. Preferred names will appear in various UB systems including Digication, staff rosters and UBLearns.

On Aug. 9, university officials released an updated UB Stampede bus schedule that eliminates service from North Campus residence halls to South Campus after 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The last bus from South Campus to North Campus residence halls will be at 2 a.m. The Yellow Line, which runs between Flint Loop and South, will run every 30 minutes throughout the night.
Walking across a stage in a swimsuit and four-inch heels isn’t something that runs through the minds of most students in their last year of law school. For Williamsville native and UB law student Gabrielle Walter, balancing work, school and competing in pageants was all worth the stress of being crowned this year’s Miss New York. Walter is preparing to travel to Ocean City, NJ, to compete in the Miss America competition this September.

Elijah Tyson used to bring his lunch to campus every day. His intention was to save money and eat healthy, but instead, he pulled out a crumpled up, lukewarm lunch to eat. Tyson, a senior business administration major, met Abid Alam and Hnu Thaper in Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity.
Like most kids their age, the eighth grade students at Buffalo School 31 would rather talk about new movies or share gossip with friends than spend extra time learning about science. Sushmita Gelda, a senior English major, and Antara Majumdar, a senior biomedical sciences major, weren’t sure how to engage the students they mentored.
When people hear my high heels clink from a distance and spot a butterscotch blonde donned in a loose-fit romper, they know I’ve entered the room. I’m slightly embarrassed to say I regularly agonize over my outfits in the morning. I often change my outfit up to five times until I find the right one. I struggle to shut my drawer filled with clothes with the tags still on them on a daily basis. I’ve FaceTimed friends in a panic for second opinions on my outfits before I go out.
Leah Berst believes “My Fair Lady” is a fairytale. Throughout the play, her character Eliza Doolittle wears several decadent costumes fit for a princess. Berst, a senior musical theater major, said the costumes help her embody the iconic Eliza.
Jess Trainor would rather not work than work a job that made her hide her tattoos. Trainor, a junior health and human services major, has a tattoo on each arm, a quote across her back and plans to get a new one each year. She currently works with autistic children and hopes to work someday as a children’s social worker.
