CFA development to be a part of UB 2020

Tom Burrows, the director of the Center for the Arts (CFA), addressed the development of the CFA as part of the UB 2020 plan during a Faculty Senate Executive Committee meeting this past Wednesday.According to Burrows, the scheduled 11-year development of the CFA will significantly contribute to UB's plan for communal integration."One of the best ways to reach out to the community and get people to come to our campus is through the CFA," Burrows said.

New leadership office focuses on volunteerism

Students and faculty filled the newly renovated 235 Student Union - formerly a commuter lounge - for the grand opening of the Center for Student Leadership and Community Engagement.According to Andrea Costantino, director of Student Life, the new center will enhance UB's ability to reach out to the community."Part of the University's mission is connecting our campus to the local community...(the office) will service the Buffalo and the Amherst community," Costantino said.

Professor demonstrates Aristotle's logic

UB professor of philosophy Dr. John Corcoran hosted a presentation and discussion on his paper, Aristotle's Demonstrative Logic, this past Thursday.Corcoran wrote the paper in a way that would be understandable to non-specialists so that the discussion could be open to all students.

Greeks raise awareness for two separate charities

Mu Sigma Upsiton Sorority and Alpha Phi Alpha have taken up residence in the Student Union this week, focusing their efforts on charitable causes by selling baked goods.The Mu Sigma Upsiton Sorority is raising money for a five-mile AIDS walk in New York City on May 20.

Celebrating at the on-campus Big Easy

Beads, Cajun cuisine and loud New Orleans jazz were the order of the day at the Center for Tomorrow this past Tuesday.Students lined up to enjoy the festivities presented by the Campus Dining and Shops in celebration of Mardi Gras, inspired by the famous New Orleans festivities.The authentic cuisine highlighted the event, and even the most timid eaters gave rave reviews.

Physiology prof. wins $4.6 mil research award

Thanks to cutting edge developments in neuroscience, the Jacob Javits Award has been presented for a second time to Anthony Auerbach, professor of physiology and biophysics.Auerbach was awarded $4.63 million for his research on synoptic receptors and their interactions with drugs.

A Fond Farewell for Greiner On Last Radio Show

When outgoing President William R. Greiner sat down in a cozy Allen Hall studio for his final "Talk of the University" broadcast, he was greeted by voices familiar to citizens across Western New York.Among the listeners who called the WBFO program Wednesday night were New York's two Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton.Both senators took a break from an all-night legislative marathon on Capitol Hill to praise the outgoing president and wish him good luck.

Capaldi: No Direct Benefit of Tuition Hike

While most State University of New York students noticed this year's $950 tuition increase, the first general tuition increase in seven years, the university has yet to see any benefits, according to Provost Elizabeth Capaldi.Capaldi discussed the struggles of breaking even within the confines of a dropping budget at Wednesday's meeting of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee in Capen Hall.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity at the Latino Bazaar

The sound of dancing feet and the scents of popcorn, cotton candy and spicy food wafted through the Student Union lobby on Wednesday at the eighth annual Latino Bazaar.The theme of the event changes from year to year and has its origins in students' desire to increase cultural awareness around campus, according to Student Life Coordinator Vicki Sapp.

New Major Explores the 'Global Phenomenon' of Asia

The Asian studies program at UB is now offering a major in addition to its minor, in hopes of letting students take a closer look at the distinct intricacies of Asian culture.The Asian studies program was established in 1993, according to director Thomas Burkman, an expert on Japanese history.

GSA Kicks Off Computer Tutoring Program

Friday the Graduate Student Association kicked off over a month of free computer training sessions that officials say will help graduate students with their research by providing programming skills.The training sessions cover four different computer programming applications - Matlab, C, C++ and Visual Basic - and take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in 139 Hochstetter Hall.
