Caroline Genco, Tufts University provost and senior vice president, was named UB's 16th president Tuesday afternoon, marking the first time the university will see a female president in its 180-year history.

Caroline Genco — Tufts University’s provost and senior vice president — will succeed Satish Tripathi as UB’s 16th president starting Aug. 10, making her the first woman to lead the university in its 180-year history. She will also be the first Buffalo native to oversee the university after the presidency was established in 1962.

Under Tripathi’s watch, the university had expanded the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, became a leader in artificial intelligence research and oversaw the construction or modernization of several buildings.

UB revises protest policies, extends review period

UB lifted bans on chalking, anonymous posters and amplification equipment in its recently drafted assembly policies in response to feedback from students and faculty, including the Faculty Senate, as of yesterday. The policy review period is extended for two more weeks with its end date being updated to Oct. 14.  


Michael Cain has served as dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences since 2006 and as vice president for health sciences since 2011.

Michael Cain steps down as Jacobs School dean

Michael Cain, vice president for health sciences and dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences  is stepping down from these roles effective Aug. 31 to assume a “faculty position,” the university wrote in a news release Tuesday.
