Buffalo, this week especially, is a city that champions local talent. Buffalo has its usual diverse range of concerts featured in “The Grapevine,” from a nationally acclaimed a capella group to a funk and soul band. This week there are also three local talents performing throughout the city. Every show promises a great time, whether you’re looking to party and dance at a electro DJ set or just lounge around and listen to rock ‘n’ roll – Buffalo has it all.

I am standing in The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe with my study abroad group from the University of Buffalo and watching as people openly start to cry. They are remembering the six million Jews the Nazis systematically murdered from 1938-45. This monument is near the Brandenburg Gate, the city’s most iconic monument. It stands directly in the path of all tourists who visit this city.

Everyone has a favorite part of the Super Bowl: the football, commercials or chicken wing dip. But the most popular event, apart from the game, is the annual halftime performance by a high-profile artist or band. This year’s halftime show will feature Katy Perry and will assuredly be a funky affair filled with flashing neon lights and elaborate costumes. Although it’s no Madison Square Garden, Buffalo is a hotspot for big and small bands. Everyday, multiple shows are held at local venues all over the city such as Town Ballroom, Waiting Room, Mohawk Place and Buffalo Iron Works. Perhaps, because of UB’s relative distance from downtown, these concerts go under the radar of many students, but not anymore. Here’s a list of this week’s concerts around the Buffalo area.

In their formative days, The Proles practiced in a tiny, crammed bedroom. They had to haul all of their gear up to the second floor and then somehow find enough space in the room to practice, while also keeping their noise level reasonable. The guitarists sat on the bed for the session, and the drummer played with nothing but a couple pots and pans, and a few recently-emptied Labatt bottles.
