"Through tragedy, hope and community emerge in Buffalo"

Grief and sadness met with universal support from city, nation

???As the dust begins to settle in Clarence Center, the crash site of Flight 3407, all here at The Spectrum would like to offer our deepest sympathies to the grieving families of the 50 lives lost in the tragedy.

???The Buffalo area, still referred to as the City of Good Neighbors, has always had a communal reaction to tragedies, big and small. Thursday's plane crash, however, is something uncommon in an area not unfamiliar with hardship.

???With the entire nation turning its eyes to an area of Western New York mostly disregarded and forgotten, terrible news was met with incredible resolve. Whether it be the quick response time of emergency crews, the organized, humble media coverage or the outpouring of support and concern from all watching, this nation was reminded of what makes Buffalo special: its ability to survive.

???Our hearts go out to the deceased with connections to UB and their families; Former UB adjunct faculty member Alison Des Forges, UB alumni Gerard Niewood and Susan Wehle, former Putnam's manager David Borner, Ellyse Kausner, niece of Law School Events Coordinator Ellen L. Kausner and UB graduate Douglas C. Wielinski, who lost his life when the plane crashed into his home.

???For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction which, in this case, has been one of strength and hope. Fear must be quelled, now more than ever. Planes will continue to fly out of, and in to, the Buffalo Niagara International Airport safely, and hopefully whatever caused the crash will be identified so as to prevent future disasters.

???An on-campus candlelight vigil has been tentatively planned for this week. Counseling is also available at 120 Richmond Quad and can be reached via phone at 716-645-2720. Further self-help information is online at www.wellness.buffalo.edu/ccenter/deathgrief.php.
